Charlie Brooker’s Antiviral Wipe aired on BBC Two last night, and this was the first time fans have seen him on screen since his BAFTA Award-winning show Wipe aired in 2016. The 49-year-old revealed his reason for leaving Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan out of the show.

Antiviral Wipe explored life under lockdown and discussed what families have been watching during the coronavirus pandemic during the one-off special.

But for some viewers, one person’s absence was noticeable, as the GMB frontman has been vocal about the Government’s response to COVID-19.

During the show, the comedy personas reviewed various TV shows and other forms of entertainment during the lockdown period.

The hilarious episode featured footage from BBC News, including Boris Johnson’s daily briefings, and footage of what celebrities have been doing to raise money for the NHS heroes.

But Charlie decided to not include Piers because it would have meant “saying something nice” about the journalist.

Speaking to GQ, Charlie revealed his reasoning for not including the GMB host on the programme.

“He’s an odd fish, isn’t he?” The Black Mirror star admitted.

“Because he obviously thrives on antagonising people, and so when he’s antagonising the right people from whatever your viewpoint then he’s a bit of a hero.”

He continued: “I suppose in some ways it’s refreshing because he does seem to actually relish being disliked by half the population at any given time.”

Speaking to the same publication about how lockdown has been treating him, Charlie said: “Surprisingly well. And no-one is more surprised than me. I’ve always feared something terrible happening, so when it happens, I don’t have to worry about the unknown any more.

“I was expecting to be spending a lot of time writing right around now anyway. And so, obviously, a lot of my job involves self-isolation, sitting in a room typing, so that hasn’t been a huge adjustment for me.

“Neither myself nor Konnie [Huq] really go out that often. On the weekends, we’d be sitting around indoors with the kids and we’d be feeling guilty that we hadn’t gone out to the park.”

The TV presenter and screenwriter created the sci-fi drama Black Mirror and presented a series of shows taking a satirical look at modern society.

His shows include Screenwipe, Gameswipe, Newswipe and Weekly Wipe, all of which follow the same format of critiquing the media and society as we know it.

Elsewhere, Piers couldn’t resist taking a swipe at his rival morning show after BBC editor Richard Frediani shared its viewing figures.

The latter shared a tweet, telling fans GMB has had its highest television audience in 10 years.
