Late music legend, Prince appears to have dissed Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran in a memoir he started writing prior to his death in 2016.
In early 2016, writer Dan Piepenbring was enlisted to join forces with Prince to help him pen his memoir. However, he could not complete the project as the singer died of fentanyl overdose just 3 months into their partnership.
“After he died, I was a mess,” Piepenbring shared in an exclusive interview with The Guardian. “I was cranky, depressed. And I also felt a fool for feeling depressed: I didn’t really even know this guy that well. But often I felt hurt and deprived and confused and angry at myself. And sometimes even at him.”
Piepenbring eventually went back to Prince’s Paisley Park home in the hopes of uncovering more material for the unfinished book, only to discover scores of song lyrics, personally captioned photos, personal mementos and even a few comic strips dubbed “Prince Funnies.”
“The sheer quantity of paper was surprising,” Piepenbring said. “In one room you’d find something from 1979, and within arm’s reach there’d be something from 2002.”
Among the memorabilia was a note in which Prince expressed his distaste for contemporary pop singers, writing “We need to tell them that they keep trying to ram Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran down our throats and we don’t like it no matter how many times they play it.”
Titled “The Beautiful Ones” (after the iconic song from the singer’s seminal album, Purple Rain), the book was published earlier this week and has received rave reviews, with the Washington Post describing it as “a curious, fantastically moving hybrid of scrapbook and fragmented memoir.”
