Savannah Guthrie Reveals Her Eye Surgery Recovery is 'Uniquely Challenging' and Her Eye Is 'Pretty Ghastly'

Savannah Guthrie is recovering from eye surgery but finds the process “uniquely challenging. The Today show anchor required the surgery after suffering an injury when her son threw a toy at her. She’s on the mend, but called her post-surgery look “pretty ghastly.”

Savannah Guthrie explained what happened

When Guthrie wasn’t at her usual post on the morning show, she took to Instagram to explain what happened, sharing the story with a photo of the toy train and her adorable son Charley.

Guthrie wrote in a Nov. 27 post: “Here’s the reason I’vebeen out for a couple days. This little cutie has super strength!! Last week,Charley threw this train at my eye and turns out it caused a large tear in myretina, which has caused me to lose sight temporarily in my right eye! It was alittle bit touch and go over the last few days but it looks like the retinawill hold and not detach and I won’t need full eye surgery. The docs arehopeful the laser procedures are working to keep the retina from detaching andI won’t have to have surgery. Very thankful for good doctors and good medicalcare. And thankful for your good wishes!!”

Guthrie needed surgery after all

Despite her positive outlook, Guthrie did require surgery on her eye and has had a less than ideal process for her recovery.

In an interview with People, Guthrie explained how she believed she would avoid the retinal surgery and even continued with her gig on the Today show. She was getting laser treatments, but they proved unsuccessful and doctors said she would need surgery on her right eye.

She explained to People that she experienced her vision deterioratingthe night before the surgery, sharing: “The retinal tear had deterioratedsharply, and I lost my vision. And that’s what happens if you don’t fix this:You lose your sight.”

Guthrie continued: “That was the first time I felt freakedout. I was hoping that they weren’t going to get in there and see, ‘Oh, it’sworse than we thought. We can’t fix it.’ That was probably the lowest I felt, because I was just really scared.”

She’s currently dealing with a “challenging” recovery

The surgery was successful, with Guthrie noting her eye is now looking “solid.” The recovery, she shared, has been “uniquely challenging” because she had to stay facedown the first day after surgery and has to continue switching between facedown and sitting up each hour.

She noted, “Your body starts hurting in different places, lying down like that.” It’s also not easy with young children, either, but her 5-year-old daughter Vale has put signs around the house that say “Nobody can bother my Mommy.” Guthrie shared, “I think she’s exception to that rule because she comes in 20 times a day.”

Charley, she said, has been “so sweet” and obviously the incident was an accident that she doesn’t want him to feel guilty about. Guthrie explained, “He’s a little boy. He didn’t mean to do that. He got a two minute time out and that’s it. I would ever want him to feel responsible.”

When is Savannah Guthrie returning to Today?

The Today anchor is hopeful she’ll be back at the desk before Christmas but admits that her eye currently isn’t pretty.

She shared: “If this eye looks anything like it does right now, I would not do that to America. It’s pretty ghastly. I look like a prizefighter… who lost.”
