Benidorm star Sherrie Hewson, 70, has claimed she was axed from Coronation Street just hours after she was rushed to hospital to undergo emergency eye surgery. The actress starred as corner shop boss Maureen Webster for four years on the ITV soap before she left in 1997.
Opening up on her departure from Corrie, Sherrie explained that she was admitted to casualty while filming scenes after she noticed her vision had become clouded.
Her hospital admission occurred just before she discovered her contract was up.
Sherrie underwent laser eye surgery to remove blood and water from her retina before she was able to return to work that day.
However, when the star was due to go home, she was called in for a meeting with Corrie’s new producer Brian Parker.

At the time, sources at the soap claimed Parker was nicknamed “the axeman” for getting rid of some of the show’s most popular characters.
While Parker was the soap’s producer, other fan favourite characters including Andy McDonald, Bill Webster, Don Brennan and Derek Wilton were also written out of the script.
Sherrie reflected on her exit from the soap while chatting on YouTube show Girl Talk with author Melanie Blake.
She explained: “I came off after finishing the scene and I was a little bit scared, because I didn’t know what had happened to my eye and someone said, ‘Can you go and see the Producer.’
“I went to his office and opened the door and he said: ‘Don’t sit down. Just to let you know that I’ve decided not to carry on with your character. And when you go downstairs there’ll be press everywhere, because they know, but don’t speak to them, it’s all been done’.”
The actress went on to say that she often used to take the bread used as a prop in the corner shop where her character worked back home with her, so it didn’t go to waste.
However, this decision then led to an unfortunate headline due to her leaving the soap.
She recalled: “In my stupor I went to my shop and got my loaf of bread.

Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for ITV for comment.
Sherrie went on to become a regular panellist on Loose Women and star in ITV comedy Benidorm.
Elsewhere, Sherrie recently showed off the results of her “love handles face lift”, which involved having fat taken from other parts of her body and injected into her face.
The treatment Sherrie wanted takes fat from a target area in the body, mixes it with the patient’s blood, and then injects it into the face.
Sherrie gave her Loose Women co-stars Ruth Langsford, Saira Khan, Coleen Nolan, and Janet Street Porter an insight into the process with a video, which was recorded during her treatment.
It comes after the star lost her brother Brett Hutchinson, 71, who died from a brain tumour in April this year, following a battle with pneumonia.
She said on the programme: “When my brother was ill, I thought I’m gonna save some money and take my family on a lovely holiday.
“Covid happened, so I thought I’ll give some money to charity and the rest of it I’m going to treat myself.”
