Simon Cowell’s heartfelt gesture to Il Divo’s Carlos Marin before death

Carlos Marin’s ex-wife has revealed the kind gesture Simon Cowell made before the singer’s death.

Il Divo star Marin died on December 19 at the age of 53 after being admitted to the Manchester Royal Hospital with Covid and falling into a coma.

According to Marin’s former wife Geraldine Larrosa, Cowell – who formed Il Divo in 2003 – rang the hospital to make it be known that he was available to help.

Speaking to reporters, Larrosa said according to Hello!: ‘Simon Cowell personally phoned the hospital and offered to help with anything.

‘To help him, send him a plane in case they could fly [to Spain] sooner, but it was impossible. He was very sick and he would not have survived the pressure of the plane.’

Larrosa also thanked stars such as Barbra Streisand for reaching out with messages of condolences following Marin’s death.

Il Divo signed to Cowell’s record label Syco in 2003, though they later parted ways with the music mogul, going on to be a worldwide success.

Cowell paid tribute to Marin following his death, writing in a Twitter post: ‘I am finding this so difficult to put into words how I feel right now. I am devastated Carlos Marin has passed away.

‘He loved life. He loved performing and always had so much appreciation towards the fans who supported the group from day 1. Rest in peace Carlos. I will miss you.’

Marin was rushed to hospital earlier in December after falling ill with Covid. The German-born Spanish baritone singer was placed in the intensive care unit and Spanish outlets reported at the time that he was in a coma.

He was laid to rest with a funeral service in Madrid on Monday.

Marin’s bandmates Urs Bühler, David Miller, and Sébastien Izambard, confirmed his death on social media and paid tribute to their friend and colleague of nearly two decades.

‘It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away,’ they penned, beside a photo of him.

‘He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There wiIl never be another voice or spirit like Carlos.’

They continued: ‘For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend,’ they concluded the post.

‘We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace. With Love — David, Sebastien and Urs.’
