Olympic medalist Simon Biles is currently in a relationship with NFL star Jonathan Owens.
The pair recently celebrated a milestone in their romance: They got engaged on Valentine’s Day. Some fans are no doubt wondering if Biles knew Owens would propose to her before the event, and Biles recently revealed if there were anything she had an inkling about during their relationship.
How did Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens meet?
Biles and Owens met on the dating app Raya in March 2020.
Owens later shared with Texas Monthly in June 2021 that he did not know who Biles was before they became acquainted with each other. He explained, “I just hadn’t heard of her, and when I told her that, that’s one of the things she liked.”
He also revealed on an episode of Simone vs. Herself: “It was just kind of like, ‘Oh, she’s got a lot of followers. You know, she must be pretty good or something.’ That’s how I would tell people, and they’re like, ‘Simone Biles?! You for real, the gymnast?!’ And I’m like, ‘Man, she’s good like that?!’ Like I didn’t [know].”
The couple’s romance picked up around the time that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic was unraveling around the world. With their careers put on hold for a while, Biles and Owens got to spend a lot of time together.
They went public with their relationship in August 2020.
Simon Biles reveals she knew Jonathan Owens would propose ‘this year’
On Valentine’s Day 2022, Biles and Owen took their relationship to the next step with an engagement. The pair shared photos on Instagram of Owens getting down on one knee and proposing to Biles.
In a new interview with the Today show, Biles revealed that she knew an engagement would come in the near future, but she did not predict that it would happen on Valentine’s Day.
“I thought it might happen this year, but definitely not on Valentine’s Day, so that’s why it was such a shock,” Biles said. “The way he set everything up was just so seamless.”
Owens added, “She really had no clue. She thought it was a normal day.”
The football player explained that the engagement “took a lot of planning” on his part. He shared that he started the process “in early December” and enlisted the help of a cousin. Owens also managed to find time alone to talk to Biles’ parents.
Jonathan Owens believes they are a ‘match made in heaven’
Biles and Owens have a lot in common, and Owens even believes they are a “match made in heaven.”
For example, they are both professional athletes and understand each other’s commitment to performing at high levels.
Owens told Texas Monthly, “We talk all the time about that, just the pressure she goes through. I try to be her motivating factor whenever I sense that she’s kind of maybe getting down on herself … It’s a great feeling when the person you’re in a relationship with understands what you’re going through.”
Additionally, both Biles and Owens have bulldogs. Biles has two French bulldogs named Lilo and Rambo, and Owens has a bulldog named Zeus. Owens even revealed that their four-legged companions have “become best friends” with each other.
