Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc quit Great British Bake Off because cruel producers made ‘contestants cry’

Sue Perkins has revealed why she and Mel Giedroyc resigned from The Great British Bake Off on the first day of filming.

The 50 year old and Mel, 51, were on the show for six years between 2010 and 2016, hosting a total of seven series together, but were left unhappy after feeling it had become too cruel towards contestants.

In an interview, Sue explained: "We resigned, basically. Because it was not a kind show."

In an attempt to describe exactly why the comedy duo believe the show's mood changed, she told the Radio Times magazine: "They were pointing cameras in the bakers’ faces and making them cry and saying, ‘Tell us about your dead gran.’

"So we had very stiff words about how we wanted to proceed. I think we can say that, now we’re out of it, can’t we?”

Sue continued: "We’re quite cheesy and homespun and we just want to have a laugh. Who wants to see people crying? I don’t. Especially if you work in television and you know the mechanisms that have been used to make them cry.”

Four years ago, in 2016, the makers of the hit baking show Love Productions announced they'd signed a deal with Channel 4 and were leaving the BBC.

However, they neglected to let the judges of the show know about the decision, which played a part in Sue and Mel's decision to leave alongside original judge Marry Berry.

The TV personality said: "There’s no antagonism there. I just think, ‘If you’re going to let us find out that way [from TV], then we’re not really a team, are we?’”

Paul Hollywood, whose ex Summer Monteys-Fullam recently admitted she was "besotted" with him, stayed on the show and was joined by Prue Leith as well as comedians Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding.

But Sandi has recently announced she's decided to quit the show after three years as she wants to "focus on other projects."

She said in a statement: "When stepping down from a job it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family.

"Unusually I am departing from the Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work.

"As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show. Spending time with Prue, Paul and Noel has been one of the great pleasures of my life.

"These are friendships which I know will continue beyond the confines of television.

"Bake Off is a wonderful programme which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of hosting personnel.

"The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves. I wish everyone well."
