Below Deck Mediterranean star Courtney Veale admits romance was faked on camera

Below Deck Mediterranean star Courtney Veale has admitted that her brief ‘romance’ with Mzi ‘Zee’ Dempers wasn’t quite what it seemed.

Viewers will be well aware that there tends to be a boatmance or two popping up on every charter season as the crew spend their time on board getting close.

Since the very first series of the OG Bravo franchise – which set sail in 2013 – we’ve seen sparks inevitably fly between the cast, due to the close quarters they are thrown into for weeks on end.

However, in a new interview, the returning deckhand confessed that the flirtation she had with her pal in season six was a lot more low-key than cameras made fans believe.

During an appearance on Fubar Radio’s Access All Areas, she told hosts Bobby Norris and Stephen ‘With me and Zee, it was just a tequila romance and I knew that, just one night.

‘The next day I actually spoke to him and said, “I think we’re just friends” but obviously they didn’t use that bit, they used the bits where we are dancing and flirting whilst we’re working. And by the end of the season we were in this whole romance!’

Spilling the beans on seemingly romantic scenes between the pair, she insisted that there was a lot of trickery behind the scenes.

‘They had asked Zee when he was drunk, “I don’t suppose you want to buy Courtney flowers?” and he had drunkenly said, “Oh yeah maybe”.

‘Then next minute, two days later, they say, “When you sit down for your meal tonight, there’s going to be flowers delivered to the table. 12 red roses for Courtney,” and he was like “What?!”’

‘They definitely love to have a play about with the edits and they’re very clever about what they do,’ she added.

‘They definitely edit it in a way that if they don’t have a romance going on then they’ll make one. Luckily me and Zee were quite good friends so it was fine. I think he probably felt a bit set up.’

Despite the awkward scenes, the pair have remained close friends and were reunited on our screens once more in season seven – when Courteney hopped on board to help out the deck team after a team shuffle.

Her efforts left bosun Storm Smith impressed, and he promptly promoted her to lead deckhand midway through the series.

Below Deck Mediterranean airs on Bravo in the US and is available to stream on hayu in the UK.
