Harry Styles has long been compared to the late David Bowie thanks to his eccentric and unique style, but a producer who was close to the music icon couldn’t be more unimpressed by the comparisons.
It was a big night for Harry, 29, at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night as he walked away with the prestigious album of the year award for his most recent record, Harry’s House.
However, his triumph has been met by backlash as the former One Direction singer managed to beat the likes of Beyonce, Adele and Bad Bunny.
The popstar certainly took centre stage on the night as he performed his number one single As It Was and sparkled on the red carpet in glittery jumpsuits featuring plunging necklines, which have become his signature style.
It’s earned him comparisons to Bowie, who died in 2016, but a friend of the late musician has had his say.
Tony Visconti, who was a longtime collaborator with the Let’s Dance hitmaker, reportedly wrote in a Facebook post: ‘What’s the difference between the Grammys and Las Vegas? Nothing!’
He added, according to NME: ‘Someone just told me that Harry Styles is the new Bowie? From what I saw tonight, he’s not worthy of shining his shoes.’
Visconti isn’t the only one dishing out savage takes on Harry’s image and artistry, as one commentator tweeted this week: ‘Harry Styles wore a dress and said he doesn’t believe in gender while making mediocre music and they turned him into a discount David Bowie.’
Another weighed in: ‘For me is so funny when people try to compare Harry Styles to David Bowie, i mean.’
However, others jumped to Harry’s defence as he received criticism for winning the Grammy over Beyonce, whose album Renaissance was hotly-tipped to scoop album of the year.
One supporter wrote: ‘Harry Styles did deserve to win the Album of the Year Grammy award for Harrys’ House. There, I said it. Renaissance was incredible and that doesn’t mean it wasn’t. But he deserved to be recognised.’
‘Regardless of who deserved Album of the Year and who didn’t, Harry Styles does not deserve the hate and it’s sad that we feel the need to take him or anyone else down to lift someone else up,’ another said.
