Demi Lovato Through the Years

From her Disney days to her vulnerable music inspired by her struggles, Demi Lovato has had quite the evolution during her years in the spotlight. She has been very candid about her past while emulating how to overcome and persevere amid adversity.

Lovato became a household name after she starred in the Camp Rock films on Disney Channel with the Jonas Brothers. She even landed her own show — Sonny With a Chance — but she checked into rehab in 2010 for substance abuse issues.

The New Mexico native slayed the music industry upon her return, releasing hit after hit with “Skyscraper,” “Confident,” “Give Your Heart a Break,” “Sorry Not Sorry” and “Cool for the Summer.”

After celebrating six years of sobriety in 2018, Lovato admitted months later in her song “Sober” that she relapsed. In July 2018, she was hospitalized after a near-fatal drug overdose. She came back stronger again after completing treatment at a rehabilitation facility.

In January 2020, the singer hinted at shifting her focus. “When I think about what makes me happy today, I think about my family. I think about my friends. I think about my team. I think about people … connections, soul connections. Meaningful relationships,” she said in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “And I don’t know what that looks like. I don’t even know if I see it with a man or a woman, but like I just know that at some point I would love to do that this decade. And if it doesn’t happen this decade, maybe the next, I don’t know. We’ll see. But I would love to start doing more things that make me happy and worry less about success.”

Lovato found a piece of what she was looking for in July 2020 when she got engaged to Max Ehrich. She raved on Instagram at the time that she felt “free of my demons.”

“I never thought this feeling was possible,” she wrote. “And it’s not just because I fell in love (although that didn’t hurt), but because over the past 2 years, I’ve done more work on myself than I have in my entire life. Things that used to keep me down for weeks or even months, pass like tropical storms because my relationship with God has provided me infinite security. Long before I had an engagement ring on my ring finger, I had the word ‘me’ to remind myself that no matter what, I vow to love myself. You can’t fully love another without loving yourself first. Thank you God for this peace and understanding but most of all giving me the strength to fight through my darkest times.”
