Heyyyyyy! Penny, Oscar, Suga Mama, and the Whole Proud Family Cast Reunited After 18 Years

Not even a visit from Wizard Kelly himself could pull us away from this adorable Proud Family reunion. In a video shared to NAACP Digital’s YouTube channel on Thursday, the main cast and producer Bruce Smith reminisced about their favorite aspects of the show in celebration of the upcoming Proud Family: Louder and Prouder reboot on Disney+. Keke Palmer — a Proud Family superfan and the newest member of the Disney crew — moderated the panel. Nearly two decades after the show first debuted on Disney Channel, Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Tommy Davidson (Oscar Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), Jo Marie Payton (Suga Mama), and Cedric the Entertainer (Uncle Bobby) still embody their characters in the best ways.

In addition to dancing along to the show’s theme song together and acting like a true family, the cast also discussed the importance of representing the dynamic of a Black family at a time where the Black community was highly underrepresented on screen. “The magic behind the characters and the relationships behind it with us not even seeing each other was just, it’s just magic,” said Payton. “I could walk back in the sound room at any time and relate to all you guys because you’re part of me. I feel you. I feel your energy. I feel your heartbeat.”

The upcoming reboot will see Penny, Oscar, Trudy, Bobby, Suga Mama, Bebe, Cece, and even all of Penny’s old friends return to the screen. Palmer will play the role of Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, a 14-year-old activist who is independent, mature for her age, and “will not hesitate to shut anyone down with her blunt honesty and wisdom.” Maya is the adopted daughter of mixed race parents and is new in town. While she’s initially iffy about making new friends, Penny works hard to earn her respect and friendship.

Whether you’ve eagerly been binging The Proud Family on Disney+ in anticipation for the reboot — which is currently under production — or you’re a longtime Disney fan in it for the nostalgia, please enjoy the Proud family’s heartwarming reunion here.
