Joe Freshgoods Reveals New Balance 990v4 Collection Inspired by Hype Williams' 'Belly'

After joining New Balance for a limited-edition 650 “STUNTMAN” model in September, Joe Freshgoods has reunited with the Boston-based footwear label for his next 990v4 collection. This time around, Chicago designer has redesigned the staple silhouette in three new colorways, inspired by Hype Williams’ 1998 American crime drama, Belly.

Freshgoods offered an official look at the new 990v4 sneakers via Instagram on Monday, revealing the names of three colorways in the caption: “Intro & Keisha Blue & Outro ‘1998.’” Departing from the designer’s usual vivid hues, this lineup takes on a muted personality, with both the “Intro” and “Outro” models adopting various medleys of blacks, whites and greys. The “Keisha Blue” design, as its title suggests, appears in a monochromatic blue finish.

Mixing textures, the shoe employs a blend of mesh, suede and leather fabrics across its construction. Notably, the “JFG” logo appears on the lateral heel, in place of the typical 990 iconography, and the back of the design hosts lettering that reads “1998” and “Made in the U.S.A.”

Along with the shoes, Freshgoods’ latest New Balance collab will also include a number of apparel items inspired by popular streetwear styles from the same era as Williams’ highly-acclaimed film.

An official release date for Joe Freshgoods’ New Balance 990v4 collection has not been announced, though it is expected to release before the end of this year. Take a closer look at the range in the gallery above.
