Jonnie Irwin told 'your family must be so proud' in post from cancer sufferer

Jonnie Irwin is making the most of life after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The 49-year-old presenter revealed in November his tumour had spread from his lung to his brain, later revealing doctors did not expect him to live until 2023.

He was initially diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2020 and is said to be living out his final months.

Ever since breaking the sad news to fans, the Place In The Sun presenter has been posting precious memories of time spent with his children – Rex, four, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac – who he shares with wife Jessica Holmes.

‘Front seat on the Metro riding with uncle @stuart.j.kane’, he captioned the latest picture of him and his two boys on a train looking super excited and happy to be on an outing.

Jonnie added his latest health update in the comments section of the picture, as he said: ‘Felling ok is the new feeling great! Make the most! X.’ [sic]

Fans admired his positivity in what must be an incredibly difficult, but precious, time.

One follower had a particularly poignant message, as they too are suffering from cancer.

‘Just phenomenal,’ they began. ‘I have sarcoma cancer, just after third operation in three months and I definitely do not have the energy you have. Your just inspirational and what an amazing dad.

‘It has changed me for the better (very strange thing to say) I know that each day is what’s precious, not tomorrow but the “now”.

‘I was playing with my son yesterday and loved every second, out with coffee with my Dad today, just loved the feeling of fresh air on my face and the normality of feeling ok to experience these happy moments.’

Sending the message before finishing the note, the fan added in the comments below: ‘I meant to say was that I find you incredible, your message, your voice about palliative care, your honesty and I’m so sorry your going through this horrendous disease but you are so brave and your family must be so so proud.’

Indeed, Jonnie’s family seem super proud of him, if his recent Father’s Day is anything to go by.

The beloved presenter was showered with gifts from his family, including homemade cards, a Toblerone (classic) and a breakfast of chocolate Guinness cake.

Jonnie posed with a big ‘Dad’ mug and a hefty chunk of cake, as he smiled for the camera.

When recently asked what advice he would give people in his position on a recent episode of BBC One’s Morning Live, the star said, ‘First of all, embrace it,’ before chatting about his experience of receiving palliative care.

‘I implore people to check out the hospice – if you’ve got the choice of using it, then use it,’ he stated.

Doctor and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Dr Ranj Singh was also on Morning Live, stressing that he believes ‘we need to reframe how people think’ of palliative care.

‘You have a right to a choice of a hospice if you so wish, I would encourage people to at least explore that option,’ Jonnie added.
