Shortly after receiving commutation from former United States President Donald Trump, Kodak Black is now walking free.
DJ Akademiks took to social media toreveal that the rapper, whose real name is Bill Kahan Kapri, was reportedly released on January 20, 2021 — the same day Trump commuted his sentence as one of his last-minute pardons before the inauguration ceremony of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Before his conviction and after reaching success as a recording artist, Kodak Black became deeply involved in numerous philanthropic efforts,” the White House’s official statement read. “In fact, he has committed to supporting a variety of charitable efforts, such as providing educational resources to students and families of fallen law enforcement officers and the underprivileged.”
Black responded to the commutation on Twitter, writing, “I Want To Thank The President For His Commitment To Justice Reform And Shortening My Sentence. I Also Want To Thank Everyone For Their Support And Love. It Means More Than You Will Ever Know. I Want To Continue Giving Back, Learning And Growing.”
Although he is a free man in terms of his federal charges, Black is still facing a sexual assault charge in South Carolina. The rapper allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in a hotel room in February 2016, and since Trump’s pardon is only applicable to federal charges, he will still have to go on trial for the state-level sexual assault charge.
