Are you spending your nights aimlessly scrolling through Netflix, wondering how it’s possible to see 1,000 options and not want to watch a single one? Unbeknownst to the rest of us, former First Lady and best-selling memoirist Michelle Obama was filming a documentary for the past year, covering her book tour for Becoming. Now, the finished product, a documentary also called Becoming, hits Netflix next week. From the trailer alone, it’s clear this doc is going to be equal parts inspiring and emotional (by which I mean I cried). Here’s what to expect.
After the massive success of Obama’s 2018 memoir Becoming, she embarked on a 34-city book tour and a film crew followed, capturing her heart-to-hearts with local communities and behind-the-scenes moments as she adjusted back to life outside the White House.
“Those months I spent traveling—meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe—drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with,” she wrote on Instagram. “In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud.”
“Even as we can no longer safely gather we need to stay open and able to put ourselves in other people’s shoes. Empathy is our lifeline here,” Obama continued. “Let’s use it to redirect our attention toward what matters most, and find ways to better remake the world in the image of our hopes. Even in hard times, our stories help cement our values and strengthen our connections.”
