New Book Chronicles 20 Years of Theaster Gates

Theaster Gates defies categorization. Part artist, activist, social planner and cultural historian, the Chicago native creates dialogues between past and present through films, sculptures and installations that probe into the United States’ history with race, inequality and ownership.

To add to its holiday releases, Phaidon has published a new monograph examining Gates’s impact on the art world today. Entitled Young Lords and Their Traces, the book was published in conjunction with the New Museum‘s mid-career retrospective on the artist, which opened last month and will run through February 5, 2023.

The hardcover book spans 280 pages, including 200 photos and illustrations, covering the past 20 years of Gates’s career as a social sculptor, organizer, improviser, and preservationist. Edited by Massimiliano Gioni and Gary Carrion-Murayari, the book features essays by Jessica Bell Brown, Gary Carrion-Murayari, Ryan Dohoney, Coco Fusco, and Dieter Roelstraete.
