A Lego equivalent of Hogwarts Legacy, based on the success of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, is reportedly underway at Warner Bros.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was a major hit last year, but at the time it was already known that it represented the end of an era and that going forward Warner Bros. would no longer have sole ownership of the Lego licence – even if the only other rumoured game at the moment is a football sim from 2K.
That doesn’t mean Warner can’t continue to make Lego games, but a new report suggests that they’ve cancelled concepts for both a Lego Disney game and a Lego Guardians Of The Galaxy title.
Why exactly they’ve done that isn’t entirely clear, but the same rumour suggests that they are planning a major new Lego Harry Potter title instead.
The Disney game was reportedly codenamed Project Marley and would’ve been by developer TT Games, who have been responsible for all the movie style Lego games up to this point.
It would supposedly have included films such as Frozen, Winnie the Pooh, Jungle Book, Toy Story, Nightmare Before Christmas, Pirates of the Caribbean, Maleficent, and The Muppets.
No doubt it would also have tied into the 100th anniversary of the Disney company, with Lego already having a range of anniversary toy sets planned for this year.
According to sources at Nintendo Life the game would’ve included a large overworld and ‘Diablo-like dungeons’, as you try to rid each world of an evil purple goop.
However, apparently TT Games was struggling with the game and the success of Disney Dreamlight Valley made it seem less viable. Although that doesn’t make much sense given Disney Dreamlight Valley is a free-to-play, Animal Crossing style life sim.
It’s further suggested that a Lego game based on the Guardians Of The Galaxy, codenamed Project Cosmic, was also cancelled, despite being in production for 18 months.
It seems it would’ve been an excuse to cram in as many cosmic Marvel characters as possible, including Nova and Adam Warlock, but perhaps the failure of Square Enix’s game scared people off.
Another game, codenamed Project Rainbow Road, has reportedly also been cancelled and was intended as an online shooter featuring various Warner Bros. IP including DC Comics, Looney Tunes, Stranger Things, and Rick & Morty.
This was reportedly intended to be a Funko POP! product but when TT Games founder Jon Burton left with design director Arthur Parsons last year, to start a new studio, they apparently took the deal with Funko with them – although it’s no longer certain if it’s still a shooter.
Between that and the turmoil from the Warner Bros. Discovery merger it’s been a rough few years for TT Games and the same sources claim that they’ve also had to cancel a mobile port of the Minecraft-esque Lego Worlds and possibly story-based DLC for The Mandalorian.
Supposedly The Mandalorian DLC could still happen but another game involving Batman has definitely been put on the backburner, all in favour of a new Lego Harry Potter game with the same style and scale as The Skywalker Saga.
There’s no more information than that but it certainly does seem like a logical next project, even if The Skywalker Saga led to reports of a lot of development crunch and developers getting burnt out.
Although it’s been remastered a few times the last Lego Harry Potter game was way back in 2011 and since Lego has been making new toy sets recently now does seem the ideal time for a new game.
