Nivada Grenchen’s latest horological offering is a revival of its signature Antarctic model. Built to endure harsh climates and environments, the original timepiece was originally sported by the likes of renowned American polar explorer, Admiral Richard E. Byrd during his Operation Deep Freeze mission in the mid-1950s.
With the new reissue, Nivada Grenchen brings back all of the models’ classic features — from its classic design to its robust build, as well as shock, and anti-magnetic resistance. The new Antarctic features the same 35mm case size as its original, boasting slim and elegant proportions that exude old-school charm and neo-vintage appeal.
The dial arrives in eggshell, black, and white, all framed in polished and satin-brushed stainless steel cases. The black and white dials are both accompanied by black leather straps, while, the eggshell is the only option that is paired with a brown perforated strap. Adorning the dials are Art Deco-style numerals and faceted indices, complete with a matching and lume-filled handset.
Adding to the timepiece’s retro appeal, an embossed penguin graces the gold medallion emblem on the caseback — a design that also nods to Nivada Grenchen’s heritage. As for power, the watch runs on the hand-winding LANDERON 21 movement, complete with 36 hours of power reserve.
