Phaidon Launches 'KAWS WHAT PARTY' Special Book Editions

This February 26, the Brooklyn Museum will host a comprehensive survey exhibition spotlighting decades-spanning work by KAWS. Entitled “WHAT PARTY,” the massive presentation will highlight the acclaimed Brooklyn-based artist’s diverse selection of works encompassing rarely seen graffiti drawings and notebooks, paintings, smaller collectibles, furniture, and towering sculptural installations of his famed COMPANION characters.

To commemorate the exhibition, Phaidon teamed up with the Brooklyn Museum to launch an eponymous monograph that chronicles the artist’s prolific career from his early graffiti background to his groundbreaking projects in the global, contemporary art sector. Essays by Brooklyn Museum’s senior curator of contemporary art, Eugenie Tsai, alongside renowned Swedish art curator Daniel Birnbaum are also included in the book.

“Drawing from Pop and Neo-Pop traditions, KAWS’s work straddles the line between fine art and popular culture, crossing the mediums of painting, sculpture, and printmaking, along with fashion, merchandise, and vinyl toys,” as per a description from the MoMA Design Store that will be the exclusive retailer carrying the book. “This book, made in close collaboration with the artist, captures his exciting talent as never before, presenting work from across his career and exploring his unique ability to reshape the ways we think about contemporary art and culture today.”

The hardcover book will launch in four different editions: pink, black, yellow and orange. All books are available to preorder now on MoMA Design Store’s website for $59.95 USD each and will ship this June 2021.
