It looks like Elden Ring is about to become a free download on Game Pass, after a laughably unsubtle hint from Microsoft.
A couple of years back, Microsoft teased the addition of Rainbow Six Siege to Game Pass with a picture of a castle under siege and six rainbows, but this time they haven’t even put that much effort into hinting at their next game.
Sarah Bond is the Xbox Vice President for Game Creator Experience and Ecosystem, which means she not only has an incomprehensible job title but is one of the top video game execs at Microsoft (she was quite prominent during the Xbox Game Showcase).
Last night she tweeted emojis for an old person and a ring, next to the Xbox hashtag. Then, after presumably deciding that that was too subtle, she just flat out tweeted an image of Elden Ring itself.
Whether that’s meant to count as confirmation isn’t clear but there’s probably going to be a more formal announcement, and the reveal of a date, later. Unless she’s somehow only just heard about Elden Ring and this has nothing to do with Game Pass.
Some fans have even taken the tweet to indicate that Microsoft is intending to buy developer FromSoftware, although we think they’re joking.
It’s hard to tell nowadays though, given how many studios Microsoft has bought and how much money they have to spend (Activision Blizzard is going to cost them $69 billion).
The question of either Microsoft or Sony buying From has come up before but, like Sega, FromSoftware is already owned by another company, in this case Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa Corporation – although Sony and Tencent also own around 14% each.
That means buying them outright would be very awkward and expensive, although not only did that not put Microsoft off Activision Blizzard but the recent court battle with the FTC revealed they were still interested in buying Sega, even though they’re owned by Sammy.
