A barrister has sparked debate online after urging women to give babies their surname instead of the father’s.
Barrister and Director of @Right2Equality, Dr Charlotte Proudman, took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to share her opinion and users had a lot to say in responce.
Her post read: ‘A message to pregnant women — please give the baby your surname. You carried a baby for 9 months, gave birth, and will be responsible for that child for the rest of your life.
‘When you’re registering the baby ask yourself: why is the father’s surname more important than yours?’
Her post has received 33,000 likes and over 3,200 reposts along with a host of comments.
Some users point-blank disagreed with the sentiment and argued that there were many reasons to give a child the second name of their father.
‘Because when we married, we joined families and I took his name. We are one and we are BOTH responsible for the child. This is actually quite simple,’ wrote one user.
