Britain to be battered by 75mph Icelandic blast in 16-hour weather warning

Britain is set to be battered by winds of up to 75mph as part of a fearsome weather front moving in.

The Met Office is warning of power cuts and major travel disruption in parts of the country, with two yellow weather warnings for wind in place for parts of the country on Tuesday.

While plenty of rain is also due.

Meteorologist Aidan McGivern described the UK's weather as "very unsettled at the moment" with a "powerful jet stream sending deep blows" into Iceland which will lead to wind gusts throughout Tuesday and into the rest of the week.

"Although we are quite far away from these lows they're so deep that we've got tightly packed isobars across the UK to start off Tuesday and these are the expected wind gusts throughout much of Tuesday," he continued.

Mr McGivern said certain parts of North Wales could see gusts of up to 50 and 60mph, while the most exposed areas of the country could see 75mph wind.

"Those kinds of winds can cause disruptions, so yellow warnings are in force. Combined with the wet weather we've got particularly wet start to the day."
