Cyber Monday will see Brits splash out £2.4million a minute in record spending spree

SHOPPERS will splash out an average of £2.4million a minute today in a record spending spree.

They will blow £3.5billion to make Cyber Monday bigger than even Black Friday.

Many want to buy now in case products sell out before Christmas, say experts.

And over-50s in particular will ditch shops for websites over Covid fears, they add.

That will also make today’s £2.3billion online spend the biggest yet.

More than £14billion will be paid out in the week up to Cyber Monday, a GlobalData Retail study suggests.

Analysts have put Black Friday’s total at a record £3.4billion — with the online sales at £2.24billion.

The previous top online shop days came last year with Black Friday’s £1.93billion and Boxing Day’s £1.78billion.

Shop visits are already down 14 per cent on 2019, says data firm Springboard, with six in ten shoppers wanting to avoid crowded outlets amid Omicron virus worries.

GlobalData Retail’s Joseph Robinson added: “People want to make Christmas special after missing out last year.”
