Cycling is a great way to get around and stay healthy – with these these tips getting you riding for less | The Sun

CYCLING is a fun way to get around – and stay healthy.

So get on yer bike this Bank Holiday and explore your local area or further afield.

And follow these tips to see how to start riding for less . . .

BIKE BENEFITS: If you’re considering buying a new pair of wheels, you could make big savings by using a workplace scheme.

Cycle2Work is a government initiative that allows you to pay for your bike and related gear through your salary before tax or national insurance is deducted.

As a result, the tax you would have paid is reduced, saving you around a third on the cost of the bike — or more if you’re a higher rate taxpayer.

Payments for the bike at the reduced price are taken directly from your wages, usually over a period of between one and four years.

There are different versions of the schemes, which may be limited to specific retailers. Check with your employer to see what is on offer.

You don’t have to use the bike to get to work — but doing so saves commuters an average £750 a year, according to Cyclescheme.

PRE-LOVED: Buying second-hand can mean real value. Search the usual selling sites, such as Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree.

ON THE TRAIL: There are numerous free apps you can use to find the best cycling routes in your local area.

Strava allows users to log routes, so you can see popular trails on there then upload your chosen route to your phone to show you where to go.

Or try AllTrails, which allows you to search for bike routes. You can filter by a range of different factors, including views, circular or point to point.
