Everyday ageism: FEMAIL columnist CHRISTA D’SOUZA, 59, argues ageist Christmas gift-giving must be stamped out

It’s the last tolerated prejudice. But Femail’s had enough. It’s time we called out those day-to-day moments when we’re patronised for no longer being young…

A few Christmases ago, I was tasked with buying an elderly relative a Christmas present.

Cross at having to add yet another person to the list, I resolved to make no effort whatsoever — pick up a gift pack of Yardley soaps from Boots next time I was in there.

The thinking behind this, I am ashamed to say, is that it would be a waste to buy anything too expensive for someone so old (she was 87 and bed ridden at the time) and, besides, isn’t getting anything when you reach that age a bonus?

In fact, guilt got the better of me and I bought a way-over-budget Shetland wool cardie, which she still wears — years later and very much alive — with pride.

This thinking that older people matter less when it comes to presents, and that Christmas is for children, is flawed.

I want to send out a clarion call: ageist gift-giving must be stamped out. If any young people (ie, my kids) are reading this, beware of assuming, just because we are so much older, that it’s the thought that counts. I’ve given you the money, and hastily wrapped Tesco tea lights simply won’t do.
