Granger Smith and his wife, Amber Smith, were “honest” when telling their two kids about their 3-year-old brother River’s death in June 2019.
“We had to be very honest from the very beginning,” Amber, 40, said on a recent episode of Dear Media’s “Meaning Full Living” podcast.
“We went home [from the hospital] with that intention of being very honest,” she continued. “We said, ‘River was without oxygen for too long. They did everything that they could, but Bubbie died.’”
Amber and the country singer, 42, then let London, now 10, and Lincoln, now 8, “process their emotions.”
The actress, who is also the mother of son Maverick, 10 months, explained, “We … told them that whatever they’re feeling … it’s OK.”
Since River died after a drowning accident at their Texas home, his parents have advocated for survival swimming lessons for babies.
Granger shared a video of Maverick’s ISR lesson in May, calling the then-8-month-old a “warrior.”
The songwriter wrote, “My mind is blown. … He can barely crawl, but now he knows how to hold his breath, twist his body, find the air, float on his back and cry. He can do this falling in head first, feet first or any orientation.”
Granger went on to write that his youngest child “has the skills to float until help comes.”
In a post of her own, Amber acknowledged that teaching a baby to swim can be “scary” for parents.
“You know what’s scarier and more painful?” she asked her Instagram followers at the time. “Losing a child to a fatal drowning. This wasn’t easy for me. Seeing him cry those first few lessons, I wanted to scoop him right up, but I trusted the process and I watched as it worked every step of the way.”
