Hairdresser’s curling trick to get perfect waves using only a sock

A hairdresser has created a video showing how to curl hair with just a few minutes of preparation using only a sock.

Mum-of-two Lynsey Cleland says the simple technique can be replicated by anyone, and doesn't require any fancy tools or techniques.

Lynsey, from Northern Ireland, says she got the idea to make a tutorial showing how to master the trick after it was mentioned by one of her clients, as reported by Belfast Live.

"I tried it on my daughter and I couldn't believe it, it was amazing," she said.

"Usually I would do the videos in the salon to make them more professional but I thought no because they have to sleep in them so it needs to be done at home at night.

"My daughter is six and I had put the video on my social media and she said a few of the other kids in school were saying to her 'mummy is putting socks in my hair tonight like yours', so it's very cute."

How to curl your hair using socks

  • Divide the hair into four sections
  • Wet the hair evenly the whole way down and brush out any knots
  • Wrap the end of the hair around a sock before rolling it up underneath
  • When you reach the top, tie the two ends of the sock together to hold it in place
  • Repeat for all four sections
  • Sleep with the socks in place
  • Remove the socks the following morning to reveal perfect curls and give it a quick brush

Lynsey, who owns Hair & Co in Newtownards, added: "It's just socks and water spray, no hairspray or anything.

"People were asking me if I sold the socks I used and I was just like, no they're just normal socks, nothing special about them.

"I just thought I had to share it because it makes it easier now for mums and dads who are stuck for ideas of what to do with their little girl's hair and it takes no time at all. It's so simple."
