Millions of people around the world have tuned into Squid Game since it was released worldwide on Netflix last month, with it quickly becoming the most watched show in the history of the streaming service.

The controversial drama,  which tells the story of an alternative world where people pay off their debts by competing in playground games with a deadly-twist, is no-doubt gripping.

But in an unusual turn of events it’s also become a fashion hit, with sales of retro tracksuits worn by contestants competing in the Squid Games have soared. 

While other Netflix hits including Bridgerton and the Queen’s Gambit feature characters in glamorous costume’s, Squid Game has a much more muted look with most of its characters in simple turquoise track suits or one piece red boiler suits.

Interest in tracksuits has doubled since the series debuted in mid-September, Lyst said, while searches for white trainers are up by 145 per cent – seeing the current athleisure trend become even more popular.  

‘Thanks to Squids Game, the popularity in tracksuits has increased,’ celebrity stylist Rochelle White told FEMAIL.

‘The white and turquoise tracksuits that the contestants worn in the show sparked something of nostalgia. 

‘Think back to the old school Adidas tracksuits and the surge in popularity when Miss Elliot was wearing them a lot in the early 2000s music videos.

‘Because of the popularity of the show, searches for Squid game costumes on websites such as Amazon have increased and Brands like Boohoo have reported that search terms for ‘Squid Game Costume’ have surged 9400 per cent since the show aired. 

‘Unknowingly to the show, they have created a surge in tracksuits and effectively brought it back.’.

Shoe company The Sole Supplier revealed that the recognisable white shoes that the contestants wear have seen a 9900 per cent spike in demand as people prepare their Squid Game-inspired Halloween outfits, with white Vans being the shoe of choice.

White slip-on Vans have surged in demand by a whopping 7800 per cent in a month while research from creative resource Design Bundles has found that Squid Game is set to be this year’s must-have Halloween outfit after a massive spike in searches following the recent release of the Netflix series. 

Worldwide search engine for ‘Squid Game costume’ have increased by a massive 8,000 per cent since the show has been available to stream.  It has now become by far the most searched costume compared to ten other Halloween outfit favourites inspired by film and TV characters such as the Joker, Pennywise the clown from IT, and Harley Quinn. 

But it’s not just for Halloween. The show is steeping into mainstream fashion with Vogue and Grazia both doing ‘Squid Game’ edits, temping their fashion-forward readers to try the fashion for size.   

Ho Yeon Jung, who stars in the show as Kang Sae-byeok – a North Korean defector – has become a maison ambassador for Louis Vuitton, while Netflix is certainly milking its unlikely cash cow with a dedicated ‘Squid Game’ merchandise on its website.
