A Sydney foodie has revealed how to quickly and easily devein a prawn using a common household item you can find in your pantry: a toothpick.

‘This hack makes cleaning prawns so much easier,’ said Adrian Widgy, better known on TikTok and Instagram as Places in Sydney.

Using utensils like knives and scissors can often fail as the blade can cut the vein itself in half and cause it to disperse – which is especially frustrating when you have to devein a lot of prawns.

But Adrian’s method is almost foolproof.

He first acquired a tooth pick and located the tail on the prawn.

Then, he stabbed the toothpick in the fleshy area between the tail and the last shell segment, slightly below the dark line.

After the toothpick pierced the correct spot, Adrian gently pulled upwards – successfully lifting the whole vein out.

‘It’s so easy!’ he exclaimed.

In the video Ayeh shows how she layers lettuce, avocado, chives and the prawn mix on a brioche bun to make the bite-sized burgers.

‘These little beauties will be a hit over the festive season,’ she said.
