Husband's bitter ex is making it impossible for him to see his own kids

DEAR DEIDRE: THE ex of my husband is making it so hard for him to see his children.

They are aged 13, 14 and 17 and my husband has always been close to them.

But last year their mum moved them more than 100 miles away.

Since then, she has done all she can to stop them seeing each other.

We are supposed to see them every other weekend but she insists that if we want to spend time with the kids, we have to travel to them.

I am 48 and my husband is 51. We can manage the trip once a month (we have to pay for a family room in a nearby hotel) but we can’t afford to pay more regularly.

We suggested we pay for their train fares but she doesn’t think it’s safe with Covid-19. Yet they travel on the bus at home.

She drives, too, but she reckons this journey is too far for her.

The whole situation is really getting my husband down.

DEIDRE SAYS: If your husband has explained to his ex how he is feeling and she is still unwilling to make changes, it is probably time to consider mediation.

It might help if your husband could make the arrangements more formal.

A set routine would be good for his children too.

He can get support through National Family Mediation (nfm.org.uk, 0300 4000 636).
