A life coach who dropped out of business school to join an ashram in India – and recently officiated Jennifer Lopez’s wedding – has opened up about his struggles in assimilating back into society after monkhood.

Jay Shetty, 35, who hosts the popular inspirational podcast On Purpose, revealed that after three years of living a purely spiritual lifestyle, he couldn’t even ‘do small talk’.

The London-born influencer admitted it was ‘probably the hardest point in his life’.

‘You wake up at 4am, you take cold showers, you sleep on the floor, you get two sets clothes – you wear one you wash one – all your possessions fit inside a gym locker,’ he told This Morning.

‘It’s a really incredible experience.’

Jay left his studies to pursue spirituality in Mumbai, India, after being inspired by a monk’s guest lecture on selflessness.

‘I’m born and raised in London…so I never imagined I’d end up in an ashram in India,’ he explained. ‘And I love to go and hear from athletes and celebrities and musicians about their journey and the struggles they went through.

‘One of my friends once said to me “let’s go listen to a monk speak”. And I thought to myself “I don’t know what I’m gonna get out of that” and so I said to him we’d only go if he promised me we’d go to a bar afterwards.’

Jay ended up being ‘blown away’ by the event, where a monk called Gauranga Das spoke about how ‘the goal of life was to use your gifts in the service of others’.

However, while the podcaster treasures his time as a monk, he admitted it was challenging at times.

‘I missed chocolate, I missed football and I missed some rap music,’ he said.

Jay’s comeback left him feeling out of touch with everyday culture.

He added: ‘I didn’t know who the Prime Minister was, I didn’t know who won the World Cup.’

However, now the LA-based life coach says he fuses ‘ancient wisdom’ with ‘modern science’ to offer solutions to people’s troubles.

His latest self-help book, 8 Rules of Love, aims to help anyone trying to navigate tricky relationships

His latest self-help book, 8 Rules of Love, aims to help anyone trying to navigate tricky relationships.

He says ‘the secret’ to a healthy relationship is rooted in three basic rules.

Jay explains that you have to genuinely like each other as people, respect each other’s values and be committed in helping the other reach their goals.

‘Often we want our partner to value what we value but they can’t, they value their own values,’ he added, explaining that the respect must flow both ways.

He continued: ‘We want our partner to be our cheerleader but we’ve got to be theirs as well.’

Jay also warned that it’s important to be comfortable with being alone, as not to risk entering co-dependent relationships just because you’re lonely.

Inspirational speaker Jay was the surprising officiant for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s Hollywood wedding in August.

Last January, he joined Jennifer for the debut episode of ‘Coach Conversations’, a monthly YouTube series.

In the first episode titled ‘What’s Your Calling?,’ Jay and J.Lo’s conversation touched on themes such as finding your purpose, the difference between a ‘calling’ and a ‘career,’ and why striving for your best makes all the difference.

That February, Jennifer invited him to officiate four weddings that she organised as part of a PR stunt for her latest movie Marry Me.

At the time, he penned on social media: ‘When Jennifer Lopez asks you to officiate 4 weddings and speak on the power of love during her ‘Marry Me’ Special Performance you say yes.

‘What an incredible experience it was seeing 4 beautiful couples take their vows and having Jennifer Lopez and Maluma as their wedding singers! Their stories and journeys brought tears to everyone’s eyes and I’m so grateful I got to be a part of it.’
