I'm worried my niece is putting my vulnerable mum at risk by visiting twice a week

DEAR DEIDRE:  MY niece comes to visit my mum twice a week though Mum is 80, has emphysema and is shielding.

I worry she’s being put at risk.

I am 43, single and live with Mum.

My niece is my younger sister’s child, 19, and works in a pub.

I think she’s out for herself but Mum always gives her £20 when she visits.

I told Mum she must keep safe.

Since then my niece has been staying outside and my mum speaks to her from the door.

I’m still uneasy, though.

DEIDRE SAYS: It is good you are taking the risks seriously and your niece sounds to be following the rules.

So is it the doling out of the £20 that makes you feel resentful?

Your mum may be well aware her niece would likely visit less regularly without that incentive but it might be a blow to her pride if you raise it.

Best let her enjoy what she can while she can.
