Team Rooney vs Team Vardy – who is siding with who after WAG wars

The so-called ‘Wagatha Christie’ trial has reached a conclusion, with Rebekah Vardy losing her libel claim against Coleen Rooney, in an announcement made on July 29.

The trial, which ended in May, came after Coleen accused Rebekah’s Instagram account of leaking fake stories about her to the press in October 2019. Rebekah has denied the allegation.

But as the trial played out in court, former WAG Lizzie Cundy claimed thatthe Vardy v Rooney had “really split the football community”.

During an interview with OK!, Lizzie, who was married to former footballer Jason Cundy for 16 years before they separated in 2010, claimed: “There are people who were friends with them both who have now taken sides. Football was once called the beautiful game – I’m not sure it’s called that any more.”

She added: "I don’t think the community will ever be the same again. I think there’s now a huge mistrust and it feels venomous. After the text messages were shown in court, we know there’s been a lot of name calling. It’s a very different football world to what I knew. I feel sad about it."

But Lizzie isn’t the only person in the spotlight who has spoken about the seven-day Wagatha Christie trial.

While speaking on Jeremy Vine On 5,Nicola McLean insisted that Rebekah “will not regret” the trial and praised her good friend.

“One thing I love about Rebekah Vardy is she's unapologetically her, and she will not regret doing this,” she said. “I don't know what happened, but what I will say is Rebekah Vardy is not stupid, and she's not taking this case for no reason.”

And in an interview with OK!,Nicola explained that she believed Rebekah came across as “strong”, though believed that there were no winners.

“Yes, she cried, but she’s proved herself to be incredibly strong and ballsy – whatever the outcome,” the former WAG said. “I like to think I’m a strong woman, but I wouldn’t have been able to do that.”

However, she added: “Coleen and Rebekah have both suffered and there are no winners here.”

Rebekah also counts her Dancing On Ice partner Andy Buchanan as part of her friendship circle. While Andy hasn’t spoken out about the trial, the pair have remained close since their time on the show. In February, Rebekah shared a snap of them together.

Elsewhere,Danielle Lloyd, whose name was brought up during the trial, showed her support for Coleen during an appearance on Talk TV.

“I think in the grand scheme of things, I don't think there are going to be any winners because they're going to be out of pocket, you know, financially, both of them,” she said.

Danielle continued: “So whatever the outcome, obviously, hopefully, both girls can just get on with their lives, but obviously I am rooting for Coleen.”

Meanwhile, in 2019 Chantelle Heskey, who is married to Emile Heskey, appeared on the Victoria Derbyshire show where she sympathised with Coleen.

“It is heartbreaking to think that someone so close to you would sell stories and leak things like that so I totally get where [Coleen's] coming from,” she said.

Harry Maquire’s wife, Fern, was mentioned during the trial. While Fern hasn’t spoken out about the case, she was mentioned in court and was said to have been left “upset, embarrassed and not prepared” when Rebekah allegedly helped set up a WAGs photo at the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

Messages between Rebekah and Caroline Watt showed them discussing how to prevent the other guests publishing photos of the group until a photographer had sent his own pictures to the press.

“[The other WAGs] want to thwart the pap photos so they put their own photos online. You are saying [to Watt], get them out quick,” said Mr Sherborne.

“Caroline Watt is trying to buy time for you by making sure the girls don’t post a photo on their own Instagram and deprive you of the exclusive.”

Responding to Mr Sherborne, Rebekah said: “Well it reads like that but I don’t remember it like that and to be honest I had been drinking quite a lot that day.”
