1. Catacombs of Paris, France

A prolonged period of heavy rain flooded the overcrowded Les Innocents cemetery in 1780.

This lead to a 12-year project where bodies were moved from the cemeteries down to the city’s former limestone quarries.

Around six million bodies are now buried in the underground tunnels, where visitors can visit.

2. Conn Barracks, Germany

The Conn Barracks in Schweinfurt, Germany holds some of the eeriest remains of WWII.

The area used to function as a Nazi psyche ward and hospital, which was later lived in by the US army.

Nazis stored bodies above the former drainage room, before embalming them.

There have been several claims of supernatural occurrences here, including American soldiers waking up to see a Nazi soldier and nurse covered in blood.

3. St. Augustine Lighthouse, Florida, USA

Many tragic events have occurred at the now-historic site, leading to alleged paranormal activity.

Some believe to have seen the ghost of a lighthouse keeper who died after falling while painting the tower.

5. Poveglia Island, Venice, Italy

Poveglia Island previously served as a quarantine zone for bubonic plague victims, storage space for Napoleon’s weapons, and the site of an early 20th century insane asylum.

Locals still report hearing “echoing chimes” from the island, even though the bell was removed years ago.

It is illegal to visit Poveglia now, but you can still see the island and the crumbling hospital from the beaches of a nearby lido.

6. Isla de la Munecas (Island of the Dolls), Mexico

The neighbourhood of Xochimilc is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and has earned a reputation for its Island of the Dolls.

The site is hidden among the region’s canals, and is famous for the hundreds of dolls hanging from trees and on the ground.

The now-deceased Julian Santa Barrera found a dead girl’s body in the canal, and collected the toys in the hope of warding off evil spirits.

Those who dare can hire their own boat and view the island from the water.

The brother was a priest, who was holding mass in the castle’s chapel at the time.

The room is now called “The Bloody Chapel, and the priest is said to haunt it at night.

While the castle was being renovated in the early 1900s, workmen found a secret dungeon in the Bloody Chapel.

There were so many skeletons inside, they filled three cartloads.

The dungeon was designed so that prisoners would fall through a trap door and have their lungs punctured by wooden spikes on the ground.
