Meet the new resident at SEA LIFE Scarborough – Buzzard.
The seal pup was rescued from South Bar Beach, but was found in a pretty awful state.
When the team picked her up, Buzzard was severely emaciated with terrible abscesses and had a number of infections.
It’s taken a while for the sanctuary to nurse the sweet creature back to health – although she’s still struggling to learn the basics of eating fish.
However, snaps of the pup show her bouncing back.
Once Buzzard gets to a healthy weight and her injuries heal, she’ll be able to dive into Yorkshire’s coastal waters to live out the rest of her life in her natural habitat.
The animal care team at the Yorkshire facility frequently rescue injured seals and stranded pups that make their way onto the country’s shores.
Then, when the patients are fit and healthy, they return to the oceans – and the sanctuary works with the RSPCA to ensure this goes as smoothly as possible.
Andy Turner, SEA LIFE Scarborough’s general manager, says: ‘Buzzard has made a remarkable recovery and we’re so proud of our team at the Seal Hospital.
‘It’s so rewarding to see the seals go on this amazing journey of recovery and it’s brilliant to see Buzzard progressing in the same manner.’
In total, it costs around £2000 to help each animal recuperate.
Andy adds: ‘We’re extremely grateful for our visitors continued support which allows our sanctuary to save these cute and clever creatures.’
Currently, there are four resident seals at the centre – Pendle, Ed, Boo and Mando. Anyone who visits the venue will be able to catch them in action.
