Will Kate Middleton be Queen? Why she might miss out on title if William is King

Kate Middleton married Prince William on 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London. After this, she became a full-time member of the Royal Family and was given the title of the Duchess of Cambridge. Prince William is second in line to the throne, after the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, 93, and Prince Charles, 70. If he becomes King, Kate will be given a new title and extra responsibilities.

Kate Middleton news: Prince William’s wife will become Queen consort when he is King

What will her title be?

Kate will be granted a new title if William takes the throne, however she will not become the Queen.

This is because the title is reserved only for those who are born into the family.

Instead, the Duchess of Cambridge will be given the title of Queen Consort.

This is the title given to the wife of a ruling King and she will also receive her own coronation to honour this.

What will she do?

Firstly, Kate will be given a coronation similar to the King’s, although it will not be as grand, according to the official royal website.

As well as a new title, the Duchess will be given a number of extra responsibilities.

Although she already appears in public as a working royal, Kate would share the same social rank and status as the King.

With this title, it is believed she would continue to appear with William and on her own for official royal duties.

Even though she will share ranks with the monarch, as Queen consort she will not have the same political power as the King.

Since getting married, Kate and William have had three children together.

They currently live in Kensington Palace after moving back to the residence two years ago.

She was recently spotted out in a stunning emerald designer dress as she attended Hampton Court Flower Show.

The Duchess visited the venue to show of the new version of her garden.

How did Kate Middleton become a royal?

Early life

Kate Middleton, or Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was born on 9 January 1982 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, England.

She was born to Michael and Carole Middleton, a former flight dispatcher and air hostess. The couple founded a party supplies company, Party Pieces, in 1987 – now estimated to be worth £30 million.

Kate has a younger sister Pippa Matthews, 34, and a younger brother James Middleton, 31.

Education

Kate and her family moved to Amman, Jordan, in 1984, where the future Duchess was educated at an English-speaking nursery school.

After moving back to Berkshire the family sent Kate to private school, St Andrews School. She went on to briefly study at Downe House before moving onto Marlborough College where she boarded.

For university the young Kate attended the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Here she was awarded an undergraduate MA (2:1 Hons) in history of art.

Relationship with Prince William

Kate met Prince William when they were both studying at St Andrews, and both living in St Salvator’s Hall. Famously, William reportedly took a fancy to Kate after she wore a see-through dress during a fashion show.

In 2003 the couple began dating and lived together during their second year of university.

The couple split in April 2007, however, in October they were back together.

Wedding

Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his late mother Princess Diana’s engagement ring in October 2010. The couple were holidaying in Kenya at the time.

On 29 April 2011 they married at Westminster Abbey with a whopping 26 million watching the event live.

Kate wore an Alexander McQueen dress worth a reported £250,000 on the big day.

Kate assumed the title “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge” and also become the Duchess of Cambridge on the day.
