  • Wanted help to meet Theo who she had been talking to romantically for a year
  • He refused to talk to her giving her suspicions he was a catfish – but discovered he is real and a prince

A woman who was suspicious her online boyfriend of a year was Catfish because he never FaceTimed her was delighted to discover her beau was who he says he was but wanted to take things slow because he was a Nigerian prince.

Esther, 21, a fashion student from Nottingham appeared on MTV’s Catfish UK last night, after her best friend Anita contacted the show with suspicious about Theo, who met Esther on Instagram.

Theo and Esther talk multiple times a day but have never FaceTimed or met in person, with Theo saying he can’t meet because he’s on business in Nigeria and ducking his girlfriend’s calls.

Esther explained she was head over heels for Theo, and that like her he was from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria, but also lived in the UK.

Despite the hosts saying Theo showed all the signs of a classic catfish, Esther was delighted to discover Theo was who he said he is but had kept it secret that he was a Prince because he wanted Esther to get to know him for him.

Viewers were delighted with the outcome, with one writing: ‘Oh my god, actually a happy ending!’

Esther, 21, a fashion student from Nottingham appeared on MTV’s Catfish UK last night, after her best friend Anita contacted the show with suspicious about Theo, who met Esther on Instagram.

Explaining her suspicions to d hosts Oobah Butler and Julie Adenuga, Esther said: ‘We’ve been speaking for about a year. He never fails to send me a good morning or good evening message.

‘I find that so sweet. He’s so thoughtful, he calls me Princess. I love it. I think he could be the one.

‘If everything goes well that would make my dreams come true.

‘He’s from the same tribe as me, which is a big deal. There are 200million people in Nigeria, what are the odds I find someone from the same tribe that’s cute as well?’ she went on.

‘But he’s always in a meeting, whenever I try to video-call he doesn’t pick up. We were on the phone once and I tried to switch it to a FaceTime and he hung up.’

She also explained that whenever she’s tried to meet Theo in person he’s said he’s in Nigeria on business.

Excited ahead of their trip to Nottingham, Oobah tells Julie they could ‘make her dreams come true’.

‘She’s hook line and sinker into this guy,’ Julie says.

‘There’s a lot of red flags though,’ Oobah warned.

The pair then investigate Theo’s social media page and declare it looks real.

They spot a comment from a friend who refers to him as a ‘brother’ and message him, as well as another friend called Boli who’s tagged in photos with Theo.

Julie and Oobah then video call Boli, who say the man in the pictures is not Theo – but a man  called Michael, and is his business partner.

Esther (pictured) explained she was head over heels for Theo, and that like her he was from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria, but also lived in the UK.

‘Who on earth is Micheal’ Oobah says.

‘I’m speechless,’ added Julie.

Continuing their investigation, they find a profile for Michael, which is ‘much more basic than Theo’s’.

They also get a message from ‘Theo’s best friend’ saying he’s very busy and asking them to stop investigating him as he ‘has a lot on his plate’.

Esther was shocked to discover the news, telling Oobah and Juilie: ‘I speak to him everyday, he hasn’t told me he has a lot on his plate. I don’t understand what’s he trying to hide’.

Frustrated at the lack of progress, Oobah sends Theo a link to discover his location, and reveals he’s in south London, not Nigeria.

Despite the hosts saying Theo showed all the signs of a classic catfish, Esther was delighted to discover Theo was who he said he is but had kept it secret that he was a Prince because he wanted Esther to get to know him for him. He is pictured in Nigeria

‘He said he couldn’t meet up because he’s in Nigeria, but if he’s been in London all along then what is he hiding?’ Esther asks.

Julie then calls Theo to try and get an answer – but a woman picks up  his phone,  and then quickly hangs up suspecting it’s a prank.

”That was super weird, what is it about everyone we talk to creating this bizarre barrier around Theo? Oobah asks. ‘Whoever this is and what’s going on they need to provide actual answers. In my opinion, i’s beginning to not look good’.

At Julie’s suggestion, Esther messaged Theo saying they were coming to see him the next day.

Hosted by radio and TV presenter Julie Adenuga and journalist and author Oobah Butler, each week Catfish UK will be helping love-struck hopefuls get to the bottom of their online relationships and uncover the truth of who they have been speaking to

‘The only woman that answers your phone for you is your wife,’ Julie adds.

‘We need to be mentally ready to take her through the journey,’ Oobah said before admitting he was nervous about going to London blind.

During the drive, Theo text Esther to say he just got into London from Nigeria yesterday and gave them an address to meet.

Arriving at the address, Esther is shocked to discover the man she’s been talking to really is Theo – who invites the team in.

Viewers were delighted with the outcome, with one writing: ‘Oh my god, actually a happy ending!’

‘ If you don’t really know me, I was telling my name is Theo – which is actually my middle name and if you quite well and then I’ll say my first name is Michael.

Defending no video calls, he went on: ‘ To be honest, I just didn’t have the time. I’m quite busy, I own  three different business ventures.

‘So, to have the time to even to five minute 10 minute video, just wasn’t possible.

‘The reasons why I went back to Nigeria was because I went for from my Dad’s death.

‘I was always on the move. There were always people  in the house giving condolences or whatnot so I literally had to go for this event, go for this, go for that.

Theo then added that he was serious about pursuing something with Esther and that he’s also a Prince in Nigeria.

‘I’ve been let down before and disappointed, I wanted you to know me for me.’

Unbothered by his royal status, Esther said: I’m lowkey a Princess too’.

Catching up with Julie and Oobah three months after filming, the pair revealed they’re still talking and are planning to ‘make things official soon’.
