A ‘toxic’ boss has sparked fierce debate online after putting up a sign telling employees ‘not to facilitate friendships’ during working hours.

Earlier this week, a photo of the sign appeared on a Reddit forum – where 5.6m members from across the UK and US share things they find ‘Mildly Infuriating’.

Having spotted it on display in their workplace, an anonymous employee invited other Reddit users to comment on the boss’ crackdown on socialising in the office.

Printed out on a piece of A4 paper, the sign opens with the statement: ‘WORK IS NOT MEANT TO BE FUN.’

Typed in capital letters, it then reads: ‘This is your job. Do not dedicate work time to discussion of non-work topics.’

What’s more, the boss then goes on to remind employees that they should not be forging friendships in the working day.

It reads: ‘Do not facilitate friendships during work hours. Exchange phone numbers and/or hang out after work is complete.’

The boss then leaves their phone number – which has been blurred out by the unimpressed employee – and asks others to alert them to any non-work relation discussions taking place.

They continued: ‘Reach me at [redacted] if a co-worker is having non-work discussions on company time.’

In an attempt to keep things light-hearted, the boss signed off the sign with a photo of a Minion from the Despicable Me franchise.

‘Work is not your daycare,’ it said. ‘Truth.’

The post has amassed over 2,400 comments in the past 24 hours – with some branding the boss ‘toxic’ and claiming their use of a cartoon was hypocritical.

The post amassed over 2,400 comments in 24 hours and the majority of people agreed that it was over the top

One user urged them to reply with: ‘Don’t put Minion on this poster, you’re having too much fun making the poster and we’re not having it.’

On top of this, another wrote: ‘Better yet, call the person on the poster to report the poster for being non-work-related. And record it so we can hear their reaction!’

What’s more, a third suggested they respond with: ‘Attention Management. Work is an adult environment for serious business.

‘Please refrain from using cartoons in your signage. If you must include graphics, a monochrome logo is permitted.’

A fourth mused: ‘I have no clue what the f**k it is with bad bosses and Minions. They often come in a package!’

Meanwhile, a fifth replied: ‘That’s hilarious. Good luck enforcing that.

‘I think my boss initiates non work related conversations more than anyone in the office. And my co workers and I pretty much communicate exclusively with GIFs on Teams.’

Speaking from experience, a sixth said: ‘I had a boss like that, if I wanted to burn two hours I could ask him about one of three subjects (basketball, fishing, boating) and sit back while he rambles non stop.’
