Zendaya, who will be starring as the late Ronnie Spector in an upcoming biopic, posted a heartfelt tribute to the singer on Instagram following the news of her death on Wednesday.
“This news just breaks my heart. To speak about her as if she’s not with us feels strange as she is so incredibly full of life,” the “Euphoria” star wrote. “There’s not a time I saw her without her iconic red lips and full teased hair, a true rockstar through and through.”
Zendaya, 25, expressed how grateful she was to have had the opportunity to know the “Be My Baby” singer.
“Ronnie, being able to know you has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” she wrote. “Thank you for sharing your life with me, I could listen to your stories for hours and hours. Thank you for your unmeasured talent, your unwavering love for performing, your strength, resilience and your grace.”
She continued, “There is absolutely nothing that could dim the light you cast. I admire you so much and am so grateful for the bond we share. You are a magical force of greatness and the world of music will never be the same.”
Zendaya concluded her post by stating that she wished everyone could have gotten the chance to know Spector before she lost her battle to cancer. The actress also hopes her portrayal of the ’60s rocker does Spector “proud.”
“We celebrate your beautiful life and give you all the flowers you so rightfully deserve. Rest in great power Ronnie. I hope to make you proud,” she said.
Zendaya accompanied her sweet message with a black-and-white photo of Spector, along with a polaroid taken with The Ronettes lead singer.
Last year, the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” star signed on to star as Spector for an upcoming biopic. The film, which Spector had signed on to executive produce, will be based on the singer’s early career, the formation of The Ronettes, and signing to Phil Spector’s Philles Records, Variety reported at the time.
Spector died from “a brief battle with cancer” at the age of 78 on Wednesday.
“Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today,” her family wrote in a statement. “She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.”
“Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face,” the statement continued. “She was filled with love and gratitude. Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.”
