Charlize Therons relationship history and children as star turns 47

Charlize Theron has starred in major films including Mad Max: Fury Road, Fast & Furious 8, Prometheus and Atomic Blonde.

Over the years, she has been romantically linked to several major names and co-stars.

She is now celebrating her 47th birthday, but looking for love doesn’t seem to be on the South African actress’s agenda.

In an interview with Howard Stern, she said: "I don't know if I'll ever be able to live with somebody again. To be totally frank, they might have to buy the house next to me."

Later, during a conversation with Drew Barrymore in 2020, Charlize said: "I'm in a place in my life where you gotta come with a lot of game because I just won't accept anything less."

Despite being single now, here are some of the stars she has dated in the past.

Who has Charlize Theron dated?

Craig Bierko

In 1995, Charlize dated Craig Bierko for two years until 1997.

This was right at the beginning of Charlize’s career when she made an appearance in Children Of The Corn III: Urban Harvest.

Craig at the time was starring in Pride & Joy and Madmen Of The People, though he is best known for Cinderella Man, The Thirteenth Floor and The Long Kiss Goodnight.

The reason for the relationship ending was never made clear, as both actors were relatively unknown at the time, though Craig was significantly more famous than Charlize in in the late 90s.

Neither stars have commented on the relationship since.

Stephan Jenkins

Charlize then dated Third Eye Blind frontman Stephen Jenkins.

It appeared that the relationship was not a healthy one though, as after a few years of dating, they split in 2001.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly following the split, a fan asked which of his songs was inspired by their breakup.

He said The Jumper, explaining: "Yes. Um… no, I think that… I think she was definitely a… um, what's the word… I think that's a good answer. Yes."

Stuart Townsend

Charlize then met her co-star Stuart Townsend on the set of 2002’s Trapped.

They played a couple in the film and the romance continued off-camera, with the relationship actually being her longest one ever.

Charlize had finally hit the big time, winning the Best Actress Oscar for her work in 2004’s Monster.

In 2007, Stuart told People that they were “married” in all but the official sense.

He said: "I didn't do a church wedding or anything but we're married. We're husband and wife.

“We love each other, and we want to spend our lives together."

It wasn’t meant to be though, as in 2010 the Daily Mail reported that the pair had split during a holiday.

A friend of Charlize’s said at the time: “Stuart is gutted but Charlize said that she realised during the Mexican holiday that the relationship was over.

“They had become more like brother and sister than lovers. It was she who ended it.”

Sean Penn

By far the biggest star Charlize has dated is Sean Penn, with the two being seen together at the Mad Max: Fury Road premiere in 2015.

They even made a film together, with Sean directing Charlize in 2016’s The Last Face.

The film was savaged by critics, with The Playlist writing: “It’s, all told, a preposterous and pretentious mess of a film, and all the good intentions in the world don’t mean anything when the execution is as ham-fisted as it is here.”

The pair split around 2015, though it was later reported that Charlize actually ghosted Sean.

However, the actress denied these claims, telling The Wall Street Journal: "There is this need to sensationalise things… the f***ing ghosting thing, like literally I still don't even know what it is.

"We were in a relationship and then it didn't work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That's it."

Does Charlize Theron have children?

Charlize has two adopted children, Jackson and August, who she welcomed into her family in 2012 and 2015 respectively.

She told People that she was inspired to adopt due to her upbringing in South Africa and her experiences with orphanages in the community.

She said: “Even when I was in relationships, I was always honest with my partners, that adoption was how my family would look one day.

“This was definitely not a second option for me. It was always my first.”
