‘Guardians of the Galaxy’: Why Music Was So Important to Marvel’s Story of Peter Quill

This character was born in Missouri, later becoming one of the a-hole “Guardians of the Galaxy.” What made Peter Quill (also known as Star Lord) different from other Marvel heroes is his unapologetic love of music.

Here’s why the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack was so important regarding this character’s story.

Marvel premiered its movie ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ as well as its sequel ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

They are Groot. The Guardians of the Galaxy heroes make up a pretty unique family, but they’re still a family nonetheless. The unofficial “leader” of the group is Peter Quill, a person raised on earth with a love for his mother and music.

Of course, there are instrumentals included with this motion picture. Throughout the production, there are also popular songs from the 1960s and 1970s. According to Peter Quill, the soundtrack featured his mother’s favorite songs, passed down to him before she died.

Peter Quill is a huge fan of music, introducing other characters to his favorite songs

These songs were officially chosen by Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige and director James Gunn. That’s particularly because they offer insight into Peter Quill’s past and his current music-loving personality.

Songs from the original motion picture soundtrack earned millions of Spotify plays. In fact, fans can purchase physical copies of Peter Quill’s “Awesome Mix,” thanks to retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Urban Outfitters, and Target.

Music plays a significant role in the storytelling of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

There’s a reason why Peter Quill’s father loves the song “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” and why Starlord blurts out “O-o-h Child” while fighting Ronan the Accuser. These songs help set the mood of Guardians of the Galaxy movies while still offering insight into the movie’s plot.

“I have a list of about 500 songs, which I think of as Guardians-type songs that Meredith Quill might really love,” Gunn said during an interview with Honey and Lime. “When I’m going through, and I’m writing the script, I put the songs into the script where they seem to fit.”

“Sometimes I don’t have a song that seems right on that list, and so I have to go out and search, and listen to a bunch of stuff, and see what I like,” he continued. “Eventually, it’s all basically baked into the organic story of what’s happening in a movie, in the same way you put sugar in a cake.”

The “Guardians of the Galaxy” later appeared in movies starring other Marvel characters. That includes the blockbuster film Avengers: Infinity War. Fans look forward to more adventures starring Peter Quill and the other Guardians.

Until then, Marvel movies, including Avengers: Endgame, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, are available on Disney’s streaming platform. To learn more about Disney+ and to subscribe, visit their website.
