Here's What Went Down During Brandy and Monica's VERZUZ Battle

Brandy and Monica‘s 1998 collaboration “The Boy Is Mine” was undoubtedly an instant classic when it first premiered. The song was centered around both singers falling for the same man acting as neighbors in frequent arguments over Mekhi Phifer. Then something strange happened: the two collaborators were then engaged in an actual career-long feud. Fast forward some 20 years later and the R&B icons returned to the center stage through the ongoing VERZUZ series where each highlighted their respective best hits in a heavyweight battle — and addressed their rivalry openly. What resulted was a record 1.2 million viewers tuning in live including an appearance by vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris and calls to vote in the upcoming election echoed by Michelle Obama in the comments section.

“It was not something that I would say was anyone’s fault,” Monica told Entertainment Tonight about her and Brandy’s rivalry before last night’s episode. “We all added to it and after a while it became real… It gets a little bit frustrating for both she and I when it becomes, ‘No, I like her better. Well, I like her better.’”

“We’ve long removed ourselves from the dramatics of it but we’re gonna have a very in-depth conversation that may possibly be shared even with the audience because there’s a lot that happens, the fans have no idea what really took place, what really caused the initial friction,” Monica continued.

“I really am a straight shooter and I really do admire what you do musically,” Monica told Brandy who then responded with, “I just need you to know that I have the utmost love and respect for you, no matter the times where it seemed like I didn’t.” Things did get contentious at times where Brandy threw some shade Monica’s way when she talked about her struggle to “kick in doors” in regards to the music industries various obstacles for women of color.

Monica even debuted her latest song “Trenches” featuring Lil Baby and produced by The Neptunes (which you can stream below.) The show fittingly ended with the two revisiting their iconic duet “The Boy Is Mine.” Check out both Monica and Brandy’s tracklists below.
