Joey Essexs paranormal encounters – sees dead people, ghost pal, haunted home

Dancing on Ice finalist Joey Essex recently revealed that a ghost haunts his home – but it's not the first paranormal encounter that he has had.

The TV personality appeared on Discovery+ series Celebrity Help! My House is Haunted with sister Frankie Essex, to discuss spooky experiences at their childhood home.

That's not all, as Joey joined his fellow TOWIE stars for a ghost hunt alongside Most Haunted's Yvette Fielding – and has embarked on further investigations of his own.

Here, Daily Star takes a look at Joey Essex's paranormal encounters.

Sister's haunted home

Joey made a guest appearance on an episode of Celebrity Help! My House is Haunted in 2021, after his TOWIE star sister Frankie Essex called the team in to investigate her home.

Ian Lawman, Barry Ghai and Jayne Harris visited the home that she and Joey grew up in as children, with Frankie still living in residence for more than 20 years.

However, both Joey and Frankie revealed that they have experienced paranormal activity in and around the home.

"I know there's things in this house. One hundred percent, I know," Frankie could be heard saying.

Frankie said she had experienced phenomenon such as seeing an arm tap on the kitchen window, but no one was there, and spotting a white shadow figure at the back of the home.

Lights have been known to flicker in the house and there was also a loud crash in the kitchen on Christmas Day, but no one was in the room at the time, spilling out their dinner onto the floor.

Investigator Barry Ghai caught up with Joey as part of the episode, where the TV personality shared his own experiences of growing up in the home and the paranormal activity he had encountered.

Speaking about his childhood bedroom, Joey said: "I couldn't really sleep at night. I was a really bad sleeper. I don't know whether that was down to just being a child or not."

He continued: "Frankie experiences quite a lot of paranormal activity. When we had the incident at Christmas with the roast potatoes on the floor, she said out of the corner of her eye she could see a hand on the door, so it was weird."

That's not all, as Joey also took Barry to a nearby wood, revealing: "Through this river here, there's a tunnel – and it's known as Devil Man's tunnel," adding that he and his friends used to crawl through it as kids, saying: "From what I can remember it's quite scary."

'Friends' with a ghost

It's not just Frankie's home that appeared to be haunted, as Joey has admitted he regularly has "conversations" with a spirit at his house.

The Dancing On Ice star said he befriended the ghost after finding it haunting his house, telling Daily Star: "I lie in bed and think about ghosts sometimes. There’s one who comes into my room.

"It’s well annoying. Honestly I see it all the time, it walks round my house. I used to be scared of ghosts but because I see this one a lot I’m used to it. He’s my mate.

"I got into the kitchen and say, 'alright ghost?' It's like a boy of about 18. I just see him whizz past me in time for me to say 'What's happening?'

"I never really thought about ghosts when I was younger because I didn’t see them. But now I see dead people."

That's not all, as Joey added his previous flat was haunted too and that a deer head flew off the wall and nearly hit him – prompting his belief in the paranormal.

"One day I was staring at it and one day it flew off the wall – it scared the s**t out of me, and I’ve believed in spirits ever since," said Joey.

Paranormal investigating

Away from TOWIE, the reality TV star landed his own programme called Educating Joey Essex.

As part of a one-off special called Reem Halloween, Joey embarked on a supernatural journey to explore one of the most haunted spots in Wales.

His investigations took him to Hay-on-Wye and Abergavenny's reportedly haunted Skirrid Mountain Inn, as well as meeting a witch who offered him a wisdom spell.

Joey could be heard saying in the programme: "If I see a ghost, I won’t start praying, I’ll just look straight at it and say…what are you saying?"

However, he was later taken to Bodelwyddan Castle where he attempted to contact the spirits there, but got understandably spooked and asked for the investigation to be cut short.

Ghosthunting with Yvette Fielding

Joey's Halloween special was not the first time that he had embarked on a ghost hunt.

In 2011, the TV personality joined TOWIE stars including Amy Childs, Mark Wright, Harry Derbridge, Sam Faiers and James 'Arg' Argent for a paranormal investigation alongside Most Haunted star Yvette Fielding for Ghosthunting with…TOWIE.

They were taken to the Coalhouse Fort in Essex, where Yvette told them the history of the historic venue.

However it seems that things got spooky on the night, with a narrator heard saying: "Coalhouse Fort is meant to be one of the most haunted forts in the UK and the team's confidence quickly turns to fear and panic."
