Joy Division's Peter Hook on 'guilt' surrounding suicide of front man Ian Curtis

Joy Division star Peter Hook has spoken about ‘guilt’ surrounding the death of frontman Ian Curtis.

Curtis died by suicide in 1980 at the age of 23.

In a new interview Hook revealed that he questions whether he ‘did enough’ for his former bandmate as they made their second album Closer.

The musician, who went on to become co-founder of New Order, also expressed regret at not promoting the record at the time.

He told Yahoo Entertainment: ‘Suicide of a very close friend or family member always leaves you with the guilt.

‘And that’s the beauty of suicide, isn’t it? It’s not them worrying afterwards. It’s everybody else saying who, when, or why, or “Did I do enough?”

‘I’ve had enough of that in my life to realise that people who are left behind are the ones that suffer.

‘It was heartbreaking to put it all away and never promote Closer, never promote [the single] Love Will Tear Us Apart, put it in a box, put it in the back of the cupboard. And we went off to New Order.’

Hook is marking the anniversary by livestreaming his 2015 concert with band The Light in which he performed all of Joy Division’s songs.

The gig took place at Christ Church in Curtis’ hometown of Macclesfield, and Hook told NME he was ‘immensely proud’ of the show.

‘It was tough, it was completely stupid and ridiculous, but in the end we did it and it felt absolutely wonderful to play the whole library of my absolutely favourite band,’ he added.

It will stream on Joy Division’s and The Light’s YouTube and Facebook channels.
