Lily Collins tells dad Phil Collins shell always need him in birthday tribute

Lily Collins has told her father Phil Collins that she will 'always need him' in a heartfelt post marking the Genesis musician's birthday.

The Emily in Paris star, 32, is Phil's only child with second wife Jill Tavelman, 65, and is the youngest of the five children he has in total.

Lily shared the tribute to her 71-year-old Grammy Award winning father with her 26 million Instagram followers yesterday afternoon.

It featured a throwback snap of the pair, with Lily as a toddler balancing on Phil's shoulders, reports The Mirror.

She wrote: "Happy birthday, Dad. I may no longer fit in your arms or sit comfortably on your shoulders but you continue to hug me tightly when I need it most.

"We may not get to spend time together that often but when we are face to face, you really do see me.

"You may not always believe it but please trust me when I say, no matter how old I get or what life may bring, I will always need you.

"Whether I'm proudly watching you up on stage, laughing at home together playing trivial pursuit, I'm forever grateful for the moments and memories we share.

"Especially the ones I now cherish as an adult myself. Thank you for inspiring me and supporting that woman I am today. I love you to the moon and back again."

They are said to have had a complicated relationship in the past though, and Lily opened up about this in her 2017 book Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me.

She penned a collection of essays, including an open letter to Phil in which she forgave him for having not been the father she had "expected".

She wrote in the letter: "I forgive you for not always being there when I needed and for not being the dad I expected. I forgive the mistakes you made."

The actress said that although it may "seem like it's too late", there is still "so much time to move forward" with their relationship.

Lily – who is married to writer and director Charlie McDowell, 38 – moved to Los Angeles as a child with her mother following her parents' divorce in 1996.

Addressing her childhood, she wrote in the letter that everyone makes choices and whilst she doesn't "excuse" some of her father's, "we can't rewrite the past".
