The Tamperer featuring Maya's 1998 track Feel It was a huge success but it did leave people wondering about one line – "What's she gonna look like with a chimney on her?"

The club hit was all about a woman who discovered that her partner had been unfaithful, with lyrics about her forgiving him but warning him not to forget she knew what he did. It also included the line about the chimney, which was repeated several times throughout the song.

The lyric has left fans scratching their heads for years and all sorts of theories have come up. But the one that seems to be sticking is that "chimney" referred to a shiner, as the word is sometimes used as slang for black eye.

Music fans have been mulling it over on social media, with many saying it seemed to fit. "I’ve just been informed (taking with a pinch of salt) that apparently a ‘chimney’ means a black eye," one said on X. "So now I understand what she would look like with a chimney on her."

Another said: "Did you know that the 'chimney' mentioned in the song is slang for a black eye. Listen back to the song again and it all makes sense!"

"My understanding is that Maya was acknowledging her partner’s philandering and speculating out loud for his benefit as to what this third party would look like with a black eye (a chimney)," said another fan.

"Am I right in thinking that a 'chimney' meant a black eye?" asked someone else. "Like, his gf (the singer) was going to punch the woman he cheated on her with?"

Another person commented: "I always though it meant giving her a black eye, which kind of makes sense in the context of the lyrics. When I was forced to learn a bit of cockney I subsequently found out chimney is slang for a smack (in the face): Chimney stack = smack."

However, a few years back The Tamperer member Mario Fargetta did weigh in on the line, leaving the black eye theory in question. He was quoted as saying in an interview: "When I penned those inspirational lyrics I was literally just thinking what a girl would look like with an actual chimney on her."
