Stars we’ve lost so far in 2021 including Walter Smith and James Michael Tyler

We're approaching the end of 2021, with just four months to go, and, sadly, we’ve waved goodbye to some much-loved stars this year, including Rolling Stones' Charlie Watts and Gerry and the Pacemakers’ Gerry Marsden.

In 2020 we said goodbye to many incredible stars, including Caroline Flack and Barbara Windsor.

Saying goodbye to our heroes and the stars we admire is never easy, and it’s important to take a moment to remember them.

They leave behind a legacy which will never be forgotten by friends, families and fans, and their contributions to the world will be enjoyed for years to come.

Here we remember the incredible stars who have passed away so far in 2021.

December

John Miles

  • Tina Turner's former band member and music icon John Miles dies 'in his sleep'

Music legend John Miles, who worked with the likes of Tina Turner and Jimmy Page in his long career, died aged 72 on December 5.

John, who worked alongside other legends in the music industry, including Andrea Botticelli and Joe Cocker, became famous for his international smash hit Music Was My First Love And It Will Be My Last.

He also acted as Tina Turner's regular guitarist after his own music career began to lag.

He also made an appearance on Jimmy Page's 1988 album Outrider and its subsequent tour.

November

Eddie Mekka

  • Dreamgirls and Laverne & Shirley star Eddie Mekka dies 'peacefully' aged 69

Actor Eddie Mekka, who was famous for playing Carmine 'The Big Ragu Rausa' in Happy Days spin-off show Laverne and Shirley, passed away aged 69 on November 27 at his home in California.

Eddie, real name Rudolph Edward Mejjia, started his career on Broadway in a play called The Lieutenant in 1975. He received a Tony Award for best actor in a musical.

Later he landed the iconic role in Laverne & Shirley, which he played from 1976 until the show was cancelled in 1983.

His film credits include the musical drama film Dreamgirls (2006), Top of the World (1997) and Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003).

Stephen Sondheim

  • Broadway legend and West Side Story writer Stephen Sondheim dies aged 91

Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, who wrote many of the iconic songs from the musical West Side Story, died at the age of 91 on November 26.

The musical star's death was announced by his lawyer and close friend F. Richard Pappas, who described his death as sudden.

Stephen soared to fame on Broadway after writing the script and soundtrack for the 1962 comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which won a Tony Award for the best musical.

During the 1970s and 80s he repeatedly turned out incredible pieces for now legendary musicals , including Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods.

More recently his music featured in blockbuster movies like Knives Out and Marriage Story.

Lou Cutell

  • Grey's Anatomy and Seinfield star Lou Cutell dies as tributes to actor pour in

Actor Lou Cutell, who played Abe in Grey's Anatomy, died aged 91 on November 21.

The star was also well known for starring as Dr Howard Cooperman in Seinfeld.

In an emotional tribute, his friend Mark Furman posted a tribute, which read: "After 91 years, and a great life, my friend Lou Cutell went home. A film, theater, and character actor. Big Larry in Pee Wee's Big Adventure, A** Man in Seinfeld, Abe in Grey's Anatomy S12, E4.

"He took me to Lucille Ball's house in 1986. Rest in peace Lou."

Philip Margo

  • Singer Philip Margo famous for The Lion Sleeps Tonight dies aged 79

Philip Margo, who was part of American vocal group The Tokens, passed away at the age of 79 on November 13.

The musician sadly died in hospital in Los Angeles after suffering a stroke.

Philip famously sung the iconic The Lion Sleeps Tonight, which featured in the Disney hit film, but it was already a number one for his band The Tokens in 1961.

The Tokens had huge success, and continued touring until Phil's brother Mitch died in 2017.

Dean Stockwell

  • Quantum Leap actor Dean Stockwell dies aged 85 as fans pay emotional tribute

Hollywood star Dean Stockwell died at the age of 85 on November 7.

He was best known for his role as Admiral Al Calavicci on the sci-fi show Quantum Leap between 1989 and 1993.

He also played Brother Cavil in the revived series of Battlestar Galactica between 2004 and 2009.

Dean passed away from natural causes, according to TMZ.

Peter Aykroyd

  • Saturday Night Live's Peter Aykroyd dies aged 66 as tributes pour in for star

Saturday Night Live star Peter Aykroyd died aged 66 on November 6.

The official Twitter page for Saturday Night Live shared a video clip of Java Junkie featuring the late star alongside the caption: "Peter Aykroyd 1955-2021.

"SNL '79-'80 'The Java Junkie'"

The late star entered the showbiz circuit back in the 1970s with small roles in The New Avengers and Second City TV.

His big break came in 1979 when he joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and featured player.

As well as writing Saturday Night Live, Peter was cited as a co-creator on Canadian sci-fi drama Psi Factor: Chronicles. of the Paranormal that aired between 1996 and 2000.

October

Linda Carlson

  • Days of Our Lives and Murder One actress Linda Carlson dies after ALS battle

Days of Our Lives actress Linda Carlson passed away aged 76 on October 26 in Connecticut, USA, following a struggle with ALS, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Her family paid tribute to Linda as they announced her death in the LA Times on Wednesday.

She was best known for her appearance as Judge Beth Bornstein in series Murder One from 1995 until 1997.

The actress also appeared on the big screen as a noisy neighbour in 1992's Honey, I Blew Up the Kids and played Aunt Pearl on The Beverley Hillbillies in 1993.

George Butler

  • George Butler who made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star in Pumping Iron dies aged 78

George Butler, co-director and filmmaker from Pumping Iron, died aged 78 on October 21.

Butler helped cement Arnold Schwarzenegger's fame with the movie which also led him to star in the Terminator movie and the rest was history.

The movie saw Schwarzenegger battle against Lou Ferrigno in a competition for the title of Mr Olympia.

The documentary also helped introduce the bodybuilder to Hollywood and his film career was born.

Butler had covered bodybuilding as a journalist in the 1970s, and worked on a book on the sport before raising money to make the film.

It raised Schwarzenegger's profile, who had scored only a few small TV and film roles at the time.

William Lucking

  • Sons of Anarchy star William Lucking dies aged 80 as wife remembers 'elegant man'

Sons of Anarchy star William Lucking died at the aged of 80 on October 18 at his home in Las Vegas.

William starred as the biker Piney Winston in 35 episodes from it first began in 2008 until the fourth season in 2011.

Before Sons of Anarchy, he also starred in NBC's classic The A-Team from 1983 to 1984 playing the role Army Col. Lynch and he also appeared in three episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Walter Smith

  • Walter Smith dies aged 73 as tributes pour in for ex-Rangers and Everton boss

Rangers legend Walter Smith died aged 73 on October 13, the club announced.

In a statement, Gers chairman Douglas Park said: “On behalf of the Rangers board of directors, staff and players, I convey my deep condolences to the Smith family. Walter leaves behind a wife, children and grandchildren, all of whom are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

“It is almost impossible to encapsulate what Walter meant to every one of us at Rangers. He embodied everything that a Ranger should be. His character and leadership was second to none, and will live long in the memory of everyone he worked with during his two terms as first team manager.

“I spoke with Walter as recently as last weekend. Even when he was battling illness, he was still able to provide advice and support.

"For that, I am personally grateful. I know that he continued also to maintain dialogue with senior members of staff, including our manager, Steven Gerrard."

James Michael Tyler

  • Friends legend James Michael Tyler who played Gunther dies aged 59

James Michael Tyler, who shot to fame as barista Gunther in hit sitcom Friends died aged 59 on October 24.

The actor passed away at his home in Los Angeles earlier today, a representative confirmed following a battle with advanced prostate cancer.

A spokesperson for his family said: "The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh 'Friend') from the hit series Friends, but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband."

They went on to say: "Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once you made a friend for life."

Deon Estus

  • Deon Estus dead: Wham! and George Michael bass player dies aged 65

Wham! and George Michael bass player Deon Estus died aged 65 on October 11.

An announcement shared on his official Twitter account read: "It is with real sadness I post that Deon Estus passed away this morning.

“Deon was mostly known as the third member of Wham! Deon was passionate about music and loved interacting with his loyal fans.”

Deon was most famous for playing with the pop group Wham! and George Michael in his solo career.

The star also co-wrote the hit 1989 song ‘Heaven Help Me’ with George Michael, which went on to be a Top Five hit in the United States.

Alan Lancaster

  • Alan Lancaster dead: Status Quo bassist dies aged 72 at his home of 45 years in Australia

Status Quo bassist Alan Lancaster died on September 26 following reportedly suffering from Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Lancaster's close friend and entertainment reporter Craig Bennett confirmed the news of his passing on Facebook.

He penned: "[I] am heartbroken to announce the passing of Alan Lancaster, British born music royalty, guitar God and founding member of iconic band, Status Quo.

"Despite having MS and issues with his mobility, Alan participated in hugely successful reunion tours… He bravely played to thousands of adoring fans..and loved being back with the band and his loyal Quo army."

Willie Garson

  • Willie Garson dead: Sex And The City Stanford Blatch star dies at 57

Willie Garson, the actor who played Stanford Blatch in Sex And The City, on September 21.

He was set to perform as the character once again in the upcoming Sex And The City reboot called And Just Like That…, and he was pictured on set alongside Sarah Jessica Parker on July 24 in New York.

According to TMZ, he had been battling cancer.

His credits included shows such as Mr. Belvedere, Coach, Quantum Leap, Party of Five, and Friends, before he took on the role of Henry Coffield in NYPD Blue from 1996.

Richard Buckley

  • Fashion designer Tom Ford's husband Richard Buckley dies aged 72

Fashion designer Tom Ford's husband, fashion journalist Richard Buckley died at the age of 72 on September 19.

He had been in a relationship with Ford for 35 years.

Richard, who underwent surgery for throat cancer in 1989, passed away of "natural causes", and was surrounded by family at the time of his death.

Norm Macdonald

  • Norm Macdonald dead: Saturday Night Live star dies after secret cancer battle

Comedian Norm Macdonald, best known for appearing on Saturday Night Live, died at the age of 61 on September 14 following a nine-year cancer battle.

Norm's producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra said: "He was most proud of his comedy. He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him.

"Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that 'a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.' He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly."

The star first became known to fans when he made his debut on the iconic comedy show SNL 1993. The star then left the show in 1998.

Michael K. Williams

  • Michael K. Williams dead: The Wire Omar actor dies aged 54 in apartment 'with drug paraphernalia'

The Wire actor Michael K. Williams was found dead in his apartment in Brooklyn, New York on September 6.

The 54-year-old, who played Omar Little in the gritty US crime drama, was found in the living room by his nephew after suffering a suspected drug overdose, according to reports.

The five-time Emmy nominee achieved mainstream fame and praise in 2002 for his role on The Wire as Omar, a stick-up man who robbed street drug dealers.

The actor also appeared on The Sopranos briefly during season 3, playing Ray Ray, who let Jackie Jr stay with him during some troubled times.

Sarah Harding

  • Sarah Harding dead: Girls Aloud singer dies aged 39 following breast cancer battle

Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding died following a battle with breast cancer aged 39 on September 5.

Sarah’s mum Marie confirmed the heartbreaking news on her daughter’s Instagram page: "A message from Sarah's mum

“It’s with deep heartbreak that today I’m sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away. Many of you will know of Sarah’s battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day. She slipped away peacefully this morning. I’d like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year.

"It meant the world to Sarah and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved. I know she won’t want to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease – she was a bright shining star and I hope that’s how she can be remembered instead."

Andy Michael

  • Andy Michael dead: Gogglebox star dies age 61 after battling short illness

Gogglebox star Andy Michael passed away at the age of 61, Channel 4 and Studio Lambert confirmed on August 27 on behalf of his family.

The fan-favourite first appeared on Gogglebox on the very first episode in 2013, but announced their departure in 2014.

The Michael family had to leave the show because Andy was standing as a UKIP candidate.

However, he failed to secure the Hastings and Rye seat, so the family decided to do more episodes.

The statement, given to the PA news agency, said: “We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Gogglebox star Andy Michael at the age of 61 following a short illness.

“Andy passed away last weekend with his family by his side.”

Charlie Watts

  • Rolling Stones' Charlie Watts once punched Mick Jagger in the face, Keith Richards says

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts died at the age of 80 on August 24.

A statement from his publicist, Bernard Doherty, read: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts.

“He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family. Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also, as a member of the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation.”

Watts joined Rolling Stones in 1963 after it was started by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

Rolling Stones went on to have 13 UK No 1 albums, including critically adored likes of Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street.

Mary Cook

  • Mary Cook dead: Gogglebox legend dies aged 92 as Channel 4 pay tribute

Gogglebox star Mary Cook died at the age of 92 in hospital with her family by her side.

The Channel 4 series issued a statement on behalf of her family, saying: “We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side.

"Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend to many, Mary, who worked in the hospitality trade, had been married and widowed twice.

"She will be dearly missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew.

"Our love and thoughts are with Mary’s family, friends, and Marina. The family have asked for privacy at this sad time."

Mary was a regular on the show alongside Marina, who lived with her in the St Monica Trust retirement home.

The pair won over fans with their hilarious quips and rude sex talk.

Sean Lock

Popular comedian Sean Lock died on August 18 at the age of 58, after a battle with cancer.

The 8 Out of 10 Cats star's death was announced in a statement by his agent at Off The Kerb Productions.

Sean died surrounded by his family at home.

The statement went on: "Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy."

Una Stubbs

  • Una Stubbs dead: EastEnders and Sherlock star dies aged 84 after illness

Actress Una Stubbs died at the age of 84 on August 12, following an illness.

Her agent confirmed that the former soap star died surrounded by her family while at home in Edinburgh.

She was known for appearing in the likes of EastEnders and Sherlock, as well as Worzel Gummidge and Till Death Us Do Part, but she first found fame in Sir Cliff Richard's film Summer Holiday in the 1960s.

Pat Hitchcock

  • Pat Hitchcock, daughter of the 'Master of Suspense' Alfred Hitchcock, dies at 93

Alfred Hitchcock's daughter Pat died at the age of 93 on August 9.

The actress was known for titles such as Psycho, Stage Fright and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Her daughter Katie Fiala confirmed the news, explaining that Pat died at home in California.

Pat was born in London in 1928 but moved to the US when she was 10 – however she said she was raised as an English child.

Chucky Thompson

  • Chucky Thompson dead: Bad Boy Records producer dies aged 53 as tributes pour in

Bad Boy Records producer Chucky Thompson died at the age of 53 on August 9.

The Hip-hop star's publicist Tamar Juda wrote on Twitter: "It is with a very heavy heart that I can confirm the passing of Chucky Thompson.

"To anyone in his orbit, you know how generous he was with his energy, creativity and love.

"Both the music industry, and the world, has lost a titan."

In an additional tweet, she wrote: "I'll miss you so very much, Chucky. And thank you."

Dennis Thomas

  • Dennis Thomas dead: Kool & the Gang founding member dies aged 70

Kool & the Gang member Dennis Thomas died in his sleep at the age of 70 on August 7.

The band's official Facebook page released a statement confirming the sad news, referring to the much-loved star as "Dee Tee".

The group were known for iconic songs such as Get Down On It and Ladies Night.

Tributes began pouring in immediately for the popular musician.

Anthony Barajas

  • Anthony Barajas dead: TikTok star dies aged 19 days after California cinema shooting

TikTok star Anthony Barajas died at the young age of 19 after being the victim of an unprovoked shooting at a cinema on July 26.

He had been watching a screening of The Forever Purge when a man opened fire inside the movie theatre.

Anthony was taken to hospital and put on life support and sadly died from his injuries on Saturday, July 31.

Johnny Ventura

  • Merengue singer Johnny Ventura dies aged 81 after suffering a heart attack

Merengue singer Johnny Ventura died at the age of 81 after suffering a heart attack on July 28.

His son Jandy confirmed: "The Ventura family is proud of all the legacy that my father could have left, we have our heads held high."

Following Johnny's death, Luis Abinader, president of the Dominican Republic, declared July 29, 30 and 31 days of national mourning.

Dusty Hill

  • Dusty Hill dead: ZZ Top bassist dies in his sleep aged 72 after hip injury

ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill died at the age of 72, his bandmates confirmed on July 28.

The musician had previously suffered a hip injury.

It caused him to drop out of a number of shows with the band across the US, and it wasn't revealed whether the injury was linked to his death.

Dusty was one of the founding members of ZZ Top, and was also a vocalist in the band.

Joey Jordison

  • Joey Jordison dead: Former Slipknot drummer dies 'in his sleep' aged 46

Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison died aged just 46 on July 26.

His family announced that the musician had died in his sleep, though no cause of death was released.

Previously, he was diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis which stopped him being able to walk or play the drums, however he was able to beat the neurological disease with hard-work, therapy and rehabilitation.

Tom O'Connor

  • Tom O'Connor dead: Legendary comedian and game show host dies aged 81

Comedian Tom O'Connor died at the age of 81 on July 18, after a 14-year-long fight with Parkinson's disease.

He was known as a game show presenter, fronting shows such as Crosswits and Name That Tune.

His daughter-in-law, ex-athlete Denise Lewis, confirmed his sad death.

Piers Morgan was among those who paid tribute, as did BBC Breakfast star Dan Walker.

Robert Downey Sr

  • Robert Downey Sr dead: Iron Man's dad dies aged 85 after lengthy Parkinson's battle

Robert Downey Jr's father died at the age of 85 on Wednesday, July 7, after suffering with Parkinson's for a number of years.

He died in his sleep at home in New York.

Robert was a filmmaker, actor, writer and producer, and had appeared in titles such as Magnolia, Boogie Nights and To Live and Die in LA.

His most recent screen appearance was in 2015 in Saturday Night Live, though his cameo was uncredited.

Jonathan Coleman

  • Jonathan Coleman dead: Australian TV icon dies aged 65 following prostate cancer battle

Australian TV icon Jonathan Coleman died aged 65 after a four-year battle with prostate cancer on July 9.

Coleman had an hugely successful career in both Australia and the UK on TV and radio.

He started off his career as a presenter on the afternoon children's program Simon Townsend's Wonder World in 1979.

Coleman then had stints at Triple J and Triple M, before heading over to the UK to continue building his radio career.

Most recently, he's been a firm fixture on Australia's Channel 10's morning show, Studio 10.

Sebastian Eubank

  • Chris Eubank’s son Sebastian found dead on Dubai beach with dad “devastated”

Chris Eubank's son Sebastian died in Dubai aged 29 on July 9.

The mixed martial arts fighter was found dead on a beach.

Nicknamed the Alka Lion, Sebastian followed his dad and older brother Chris Jr into the sporing world, but his life has cruelly been cut short.

Speaking on his son's heartbreaking death, boxing icon Eubank Snr said: “Never did I ever imagine I would write these words or experience the feeling I now have at the loss of my son.

"My family and I are devastated to hear of the death of Sebastian just days before what would have been his 30th birthday."

Suzanne Douglas

  • Suzzanne Douglas dead: The Parent 'Hood actress dies aged 64 after cancer battle

Actress Suzanne Douglas died at the age of 64 following complications from cancer on July 6.

Suzzanne was best known for playing matriarch Jerri Peterson on The Parent 'Hood, but recently appeared in the Netflix series When They See Us.

She's also remembered for her portrayal of Cissy Houston in the Lifetime TV movie Whitney, which came out in 2015.

During her time on-screen, she had guest appearances on the likes of The Cosby Show, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Bones and The Good Wife.

She also played Tomika's mother in cult classic movie School of Rock in 2003.

Daniel Mickelson

  • Daniel Mickelson dead: Actor dies at 23 as celeb friend Kaia Gerber leads tributes

American actor Daniel Mickelson died aged 23, it was announced on July 5.

The screen star was an up-and-coming actor in America, having been cast in notable roles such as the horror film The Killer Clown Meets the Candy Man and 2019's TV series Mani.

His younger sister, Meredith Mickelson, confirmed his tragic death on Monday evening, announcing the budding actor died on Sunday, July 4.

"My heart is shattered & to write this feels so wrong and I don't even know what to say. Yesterday I lost my brother, best friend & the other half of my heart," she said.

"There wasn't a person I loved more on this earth. there's no words that can do him justice that I could write. to know him was to love him.

"He was the happiest brightest smiley most sunshine human to exist and I'm so happy God chose me to be his sister for his whole amazing life."

Pete McGarry

  • Pete McGarry dead: Gogglebox star passes away after short illness

Gogglebox star Pete McGarry passed away aged 71 in June 2021.

The TV favourite passed away following a battle with a short illness, according to Channel 4, which broadcasts the show.

A statement issued on behalf of the family said: "We are deeply saddened to announce that Gogglebox star Pete McGarry passed away at the age of 71 this weekend with his family by his side after a short illness."

McGarry, along with wife Linda and her son, George Gilbey, originally joined the Channel 4 programme for its second series in 2013.

They left the show in 2014 when George broke their contract to enter the Celebrity Big Brother house, in which he placed fourth.

They later returned to the programme for the seventh series in 2016 and have continued to appear as series regulars and firm favourites.

John Langley

  • John Langley dead: Cops creator and producer dies after 'suffering heart attack'

John Langley, creator and producer of reality TV show Cops, died after suffering a heart attack in Mexico on June 26.

The 78-year-old was in the area competing in an off-road race, according to reports.

John was a fan of racing and created a Cops off-road desert racing team.

Cops premiered on Fox in 1989 and ran for 25 seasons, before moving over to Spike for a few years.

The show ran for another three seasons on Paramount Network and was cancelled last year following the death of George Floyd.

Johnny Solinger

  • Johnny Solinger dead: Skid Row legend dies aged 55 from liver failure

Former Skid Row singer Johnny Solinger died from liver failure on June 26 aged 55.

Solinger revealed to his fans he was suffering from liver failure in May this year.

He wrote on his social media post: "It is with a heavy heart I must let everyone know what’s going on with me and my health.

"I have been hospitalised for over the last month. I have been diagnosed with liver failure. And prognosis is not so good.

"As with most musicians I do not have health insurance and it’s very difficult to get proper care without it."

Solinger was Skid Row's lead singer when the band reformed in 1999 after splitting three years earlier.

He left the band in April 2015 and was replaced by singer Tony Harnell.

Mike Amatt

  • Mike Amatt dead: Ex-BBC children's presenter and Mop and Smiff creator dies aged 71

Former BBC children's television presenter Mike Amatt died on Monday, June 28 at the age of 71.

The talented star was best known for his role in Playschool, which he wrote and starred in.

In addition, Mike illustrated and created the cartoon characters Mop and Sniff for the popular 1980s show of the same name.

He also starred as himself alongside the sheepdog and cat.

Lisa Banes

  • Lisa Banes dead: Gone Girl actress dies at 65 after being hit by scooter in hit and run

American actress Lisa Banes died aged 65 after getting struck by a motorised scooter in a hit and run on June 14.

The screen star, known best former roles in box office hits Gone Girl and Cocktail, was hospitalised on June 4 after being hit by a scooter as she walked across a pedestrian crossing.

He also played Kron the Iguanodon in the 2000 Disney live-action film Dinosaur.

Outside voice acting, Samuel was also a keen stage performer, and played Mufasa in the original run of The Lion King on Broadway.

He was best known for starring in children's programme Rainbow, which ran on TV screens from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Back in 2016, Freddy married his co-star Jane at London’s Claridge’s hotel.

Jane was also previously married to bandmate Rod Burton.

Romy Walthall

Actor Ronald Pickup, who is best known for his role as the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel star, died at the age of 81 on February 28 after a long illness.

Ronald began his TV career back in 1964, first training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before becoming an Associate Member.

His first ever claim to fame was on the BBC's famous science fiction series Doctor Who, playing a physician in part 4 of The Reign of Terror.

He went on to bag himself the lead role as bachelor Norman Cousins in the Box Office Smash The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel film in 2012.

Other film roles included a government official in 1983 James Bond film Never Say Never and Darkest Hour.

Prince Markie Dee

Hip-hop legend Prince Markie Dee, who was part of the 80s rap group The Fat Boys, died aged 52 on February 18.

The musician whose real name is Mark Anthony Morales had also been a successful producer and songwriter during his showbiz career, as well as the Vice-President of the Uncle Louie Music Group.

His group The Fat Boys were crowned the winners of a talent show at New York's famous Radio City Music Hall and by the time the 90s were approaching, they had quickly become one of the biggest names in rap.

The group went on to release a string of platinum-selling albums including their fourth record, Crushin', before starring in the comedy film Disorderlies in 1987.

Frank Mills

Coronation Street star Frank Mills passed away aged 93 on February 11.

Rynagh O’Grady

Hollywood legend Christopher Plummer died aged 91 on February 5.

Christopher spent the last 75 years as a stage and screen icon, appearing in more than 100 films.

He is perhaps best known for playing Captain John Von Trapp in the 1965 classic The Sound of Music.

Plummer went on to play the sinister Klingon General Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991.

The swanky venue was famous for its wild parties and glamorous girls.

Mick left TOWIE in 2013, and went on to be a property developer.

Mira also starred as Danielle Rousseau in Lost in 2004, appearing in 25 episodes until 2010.

Andy Gray

BBC Scotland star Andy Gray died from cancer at the age of 61 on January 18.

The actor played very popular character Pete in River City, which he sadly left in 2018 after being diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer.

Andy also appeared in a variety of other TV shows, including Naked Video, and City Lights.

He played a bank teller who dreamed of being a writer in the 1980s sitcom.

Phil Spector

Music producer Phil Spector died at the age of 81 from Covid-related complications on January 16.

Phil had previously worked closely with some of the biggest names in the music industry – including The Beatles.

At the time of his death he was serving a 19 years-to-life sentence after he was found guilty of murdering Lana Clarkson.

Before going to prison, Spector had an incredibly successful career in music, producing the Beatles album Let It Be, and several solo records by the band's John Lennon and George Harrison.

Siegfried Fischbacher

Magician Siegfried Fischbacher died after a short battle with pancreatic cancer aged 81 on January 13.

The iconic Las Vegas performer was known for his jaw-dropping show containing tigers, alongside his partner Roy.

They were known as the legendary duo Siegfried & Roy, who inseparable both on and off stage for more than six decades.

Roy died in May 2020 aged 75 after complications from Covid-19, after which Siegfried said he had lost his “best friend”.

John Reilly

US soap star John Reilly died aged 84 on January 9.

He rose to fame in 1956 after taking on the role of Dr Dan Stewart on As The World Turns, he later joined General Hospital in 1984, playing Sean Donely for more than 70 episodes.

The Chicago-born star went on to play Alistair Crane between 2005 and 2008 in the hot show Passions, appearing in over 100 episodes.

John’s other credits include shows such as Dallas, Iron Man and Beverly Hills 90210.

Ed Bruce

Ed Bruce passed away aged 81 on January 8 from natural causes.

He was well known as a country singer, as well as an actor who appeared in the likes of Bret Maverick and The Chisholms.

But the star was perhaps most known for co-writing the famous hit song, Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be, with his then-wife, Patsy, in 1976.

Following on from its success, he went to have an incredibly successful career with six Billboard Top 10 hits in the 1980s, including the 1981 smash, You're The Best Break This Old Heart Ever Had.

Deezer D

American actor Dearon Thompson, known as Deezer, D died aged 55 on January 7 after he was reportedly found “unresponsive” at his home.

The star was best known for his portrayal of Nurse Malik Margrath on the hit series ER, in almost 200 episodes.

The Los Angeles native also starred in hit films such as Fear of a Black Hat from 1994, and the American comedy CB4 alongside Phil Hartman in 1993.

He also ventured into the music industry in 1999 when he released the album Living Up in a Down World.

His latest album Delayed, But Not Denied, which was released in August 2008.

Marion Ramsey

  • Police Academy actress Marion Ramsey dead aged 73 after short illness

Actress Marion Ramsey died at the age of 73 after a short illness on January 7.

The star was best known for playing Officer Laverne Hooks in all five of the Police Academy films.

Marion, who was born in Philadelphia, was originally a stage actor and starred on Broadway.

One of her most memorable roles was in the hit 1978 Broadway show Eubie!.

Albert Roux

Chef and restauranteur Albert Roux passed away aged 85 on January 4.

Albert was the brother of legendary chef Michel father of Masterchef star Michel Jr, and had been unwell for quite some time.

A statement from the family said: "The Roux family has announced the sad passing of Albert Roux, OBE, KFO, who had been unwell for a while, at the age 85 on 4th January 2021.

"Albert is credited, along with his late brother Michel Roux, with starting London's culinary revolution with the opening of Le Gavroche in 1967."

Tanya Roberts

Roberts all appeared in a number of fantasy adventure films such as The Beastmaster and Hearts and Armour.

Barbara Shelley

Queen of Hammer actress Barbara Shelley died at the age of 88 on January 4.

Barbara rose to fame during the 1950s and 60s for films such as The Gorgon, Dracula, Prince Of Darkness and Rasputin.

She also starred in The Mad Monk, Quatermass And The Pit, as well as Blood Of The Vampire, and Village Of The Damned.

Barbara also appeared in the Doctor Who episode Planet Of Fire, starring Peter Davison as the fifth Doctor.

Gerry Marsden

Gerry Marsden died at the age of 78 on January 3, having suffered a short illness which related to an infection in his heart.

The musician was the frontman of the group Gerry and the Pacemakers, famed for 60s hits such as Ferry Cross the Mersey, amongst others.

The Merseybeat band toured the Liverpool music scene at the same time as The Beatles.

Gerry’s version of You’ll Never Walk Alone became the anthem for his hometown club of Liverpool.

George Gerdes

George Gerdes passed away on January 1 after a brain aneurysm at the age of 72.

He rose to fame as a singer-songwriter before making the transition to the small screen in 1968, when he played the role of a thief in Come Back Baby.

George later starred as Pete Taylor in the hit series Our Family Honour, before being cast in Miami Vice.

But his most notable roles were in Grey’s Anatomy, The X-Files and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Mark Eden

British actor Mark Eden died at the age of 92 on January 1 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Mark was best known for playing Alan Bradley on Coronation Street in the 1980s.

In addition to this role, he also appeared on BBC’s Doctor Who, playing character Marco Polo.

He also starred as Boucher in an episode of detective series Poirot.
