Al Pacino turns 81-years-old tomorrow on April 25, 2021. The Hollywood legend made an incredible name for himself by 1983 when he started working on Scarface. The star had previously starred in parts one and two of The Godfather before he turned to work with director Brian De Palma on the upcoming Scarface film. When production began on the picture the American actor was keen to get everything right, including his right-hand woman. The epic movie told the story of Tony Montana, a drug lord with more enemies than friends. Michelle played Al’s on-screen wife, Elvira, who had a tumultuous relationship with Tony – something that was almost mirrored in real life.

Michelle spoke to Jimmy Fallon in 2017 where she recalled a horrifying situation before the film shot.

She revealed: “It was a very long and drawn-out audition process and there were a number of women auditioning and it went over a period of about – it seemed like forever – but I think it was about two or three months.”

The star’s experience was made even worse by the fact she messed up her audition.

She said: “As [the audition] went on, the worse I got because I just got so afraid. And by the end of it, Brian De Palma was very sweet and he was really rooting for me, Brian. And he said: ‘I’m sorry, but you’re just bad now, what’s going on?’”

Michelle continued: “And it was true, and I was like: ‘I know, I know, I’m just like, so up in knots.’ And so he’s like ‘It’s not gonna work out, babe,’ right?

“So I went away, and then about a month later they called and they said: ‘We wanted to screen-test you.’ and I was like, ugh. Because part of me was just relieved to have the torture end. And when they called, I just said, [dramatically] ‘No.’”

The second audition alongside Al went amazing, however. Michelle explained how she didn’t believe she could get the role so felt “free” in her performance.

She recalled: “And I just sort of – I show up and we do the scene, the restaurant scene at the end, where I kind of freak out at the end, and I threw dishes, and everything went flying and I broke things, [then they yelled] cut.”

Michelle continued: “I was in it, and there’s blood everywhere.

“And everyone comes running over to me, checking me out for blood, where am I cut? They’re not finding anything, there are no cuts on me.

“I look over and Al is bleeding. I cut Al Pacino. And that’s how I got the part.”

Although Al’s cut caused by a broken dish wasn’t serious, the rambunctious display did guarantee Michelle the role.

Michelle’s involvement in Scarface is ironic, considering Al didn’t want her to be cast as Elvira in the first place.

She once said in an interview: “Well, he was probably more intense back then.

“Or I think maybe it was the nature of the project and he didn’t particularly want me for the part.”

She added: “Look, my last credit before that was Grease 2, can you blame him?”

Either way, Al and Michelle would have been pleased with the reception of Scarface after it was released.

While there were some negative reviews about the movie, it did earn a whopping $66 million at the box office on a relatively meagre $23.5 million budget.

Al also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama.

Scarface is available on Netflix now.
