MSNBC contributor Rev. Al Sharpton fired back at President Donald Trump after he called Sharpton a “con man” in a tweet on Monday, posting a photo of himself and Trump from 2006, captioning it that Trump was telling him how much he respected his work.
“Different tune now,” Sharpton said in a tweet.
After Sharpton tweeted that he was on his way to Baltimore, the city that the president disparaged over the weekend, Trump quoted the tweet with his own: “I have known Al for 25 years. Went to fights with him & Don King, always got along well. He “loved Trump!” He would ask me for favors often. Al is a con man, a troublemaker, always looking for a score. Just doing his thing. Must have intimidated Comcast/NBC. Hates Whites & Cops!”
Sharpton responded by tweeting the photo of himself with the former television host and real estate magnate:
Trump responded to Sharpton by tweeting, “Al Sharpton would always ask me to go to his events. He would say, “it’s a personal favor to me.” Seldom, but sometimes, I would go. It was fine. He came to my office in T.T. during the presidential campaign to apologize for the way he was talking about me. Just a conman at work!”
“Trump says I’m a troublemaker & con man. I do make trouble for bigots. If he really thought I was a con man he would want me in his cabinet,” Sharpton said.
Trump has been heavily criticized after his Saturday comments on Baltimore being “rat and rodent infested” and his accompanying insults of Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings. The Baltimore Sun rebuked him in an editorial that received significant attention.
Former GOP Rep. Joe Scarborough used his MSNBC morning show to call on other Republicans to “speak up now,” reminding them Trump won’t be president forever but their actions now will shape their roles in history.
