This Morning hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary have issued a statement explaining why the show will be off air on Thursday.
As Wednesday’s episode came to an end, 19 July, the presenters bid farewell to viewers and explained how the popular ITV daytime programme would not be returning until Friday. They went on to confirm that Thursday’s episode had been cancelled because the FIFA Women’s World Cup football tournament was being shown on ITV1 instead.
As well as This Morning being affected, Loose Women will also be off air on Thursday. Good Morning Britain and Lorraine will go ahead as normal – but there will be changes for the ITV daytime schedule in future as the football coverage, shared with the BBC, is broadcast.
As Wednesday’s This Morning concluded, Alison said: "We're back with you on Friday because tomorrow's the women's football World Cup on ITV1. We'll see you then with a special performance from the cast of 42nd Street. John Torode's in the kitchen making a classic Aussie burger."
Dermot added: "And Britain's Got Talent winner Viggo Venn will be live in the studio. That's on Friday at 10am, see you then.”
Earlier this month, Alison and Dermot were forced to make an apology after one of their guests swore live on air. Viewers of the show, however, loved the slip up.
It came during the news segment of the show, when Scottish presenter Isla Traquair hopped onto the sofa to discuss the “UK’s favourite cocktail” – and to drink the alcoholic beverage on air.
Everyone on the sofa took a sip of the classic margarita before Alison joked: “I thought I asked for a non-alcoholic one, I can’t drink this I’m working.”
After taking a gulp of the cocktail, Isla started laughing and said: “I'm not a drinker, but I have had one sip and I’m clearly p****d already.”
Also this month, This Morning fans were left shocked when they learned that host Holly Willoughby had secretly left the programme for her usual summer break, without saying her usual goodbye. In previous years Holly, 42, and Phillip Schofield, 61, had always announced they were taking their holiday together before giving a friendly sign off.
But Holly has been under fire since the scandal surrounding Phillip broke. He left the programme in May and later admitted to an "unwise but not illegal" affair with a much younger colleague.
On her quietly slipping away for her summer break, one online commentator said: “That seems like a strange strategy – unless she isn’t coming back.” Another added: “It’s a bit rude to say nothing. I suspect she won’t be back – she will find another opportunity over the summer months.”
And a source exclusively told OK! that Holly was putting her family first and will be using the break to decide her next move.
The insider said: “She appreciates her family more than ever right now and she’s planning to take the summer to be a full-time mum. The last couple of months have been really stressful and it’s highlighted for her the importance of family.
“She will be thinking about the future and making sure her family is her priority.”
